Does YOUR Engine Play This Sac? Is it Sound?

Post by BrendanJNorman »

So...I just played the following 3 2 game against some 2100 type guy on chess.com...

[pgn][Event "Live Chess"]
[Site "Chess.com"]
[Date "2020.03.30"]
[Round "?"]
[White "BrendanJNorman"]
[Black "domino1962"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "E90"]
[WhiteElo "2258"]
[BlackElo "2087"]
[PlyCount "71"]
[EventDate "2020.??.??"]

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. d4 Nbd7 6. Be2 e5 7. O-O exd4 8.
Nxd4 a5 9. Be3 Nc5 10. Qc2 O-O 11. Rad1 Nfd7 12. f4 Re8 13. Bf3 c6 14. Kh1 Qc7
15. Ndb5 cxb5 16. Nxb5 Qb8 17. Nxd6 Rf8 18. e5 Ra6 19. b3 Ne6 20. c5 b6 21. c6
Ndc5 22. a3 Ra7 23. b4 axb4 24. axb4 Na4 25. Ra1 Rd8 26. Rxa4 Rxa4 27. Qxa4
Rxd6 28. exd6 Qxd6 29. Rd1 Qc7 30. b5 Bh6 31. g3 g5 32. f5 Ng7 33. g4 Ne8 34.
Qd4 Bg7 35. Qd8 Kf8 36. Bxb6 1-0[/pgn]

A nice one, right?

What I'm wondering is 1. If your engine plays my knight sac (15.Ndb5!?) and 2. If this move is objectively winning.

Move: 15.Ndb5!?

I played this move because I get two pawns, tons of space and my opponent can barely move, but these are human considerations...what do the beasts say?

It's a good move , 2nd best move out of 46. Qf2 is better. It improved your game, not sure if I would call it winning - but certainly a move to be proud of.

Thanks Mike.

Yeah I seen that Ethereal 12 prefers Qf2, but I think this move is very hard for humans to understand.

The idea is to keep the idea of Ndb5 up your sleeve, whilst also adding the option of a strong e5! push (queen and bishop battery target knight on c5 in some lines).

On my slow GPU, Leelenstein liked Ndb5 as well...

It was interesting checking with old engines too... Deep Fritz 10 plays Ndb5 instantly, while Deep Junior 11 doesn't even consider it.

While hardly a beast, Weiss plays Ndb5 almost instantly (slightly preferring it over Qf2) :)

Yep, that is a nice move and most engines do consider that move 2nd only to 15.Qf2, however it looks like 15.g4 with the idea of 16.g5 also works here (probably no better or no worse than 15.Ndb5 and 15.Qf2). Personally I like 15.Ndb5 the best because it looks like you're using tactics to achieve a strategical goal.

15. Ndb5 is a really nice move.
