Tactical mistake by Stockfish (Grischuk-Ding at candidates)

Post by Vinvin »

While commenting a game from yesterday at candidates, Yannick Gozzoli pointed that 12.Nxe5 is a mistake because 12. Nxe5 Nxe5 13. Rxe5 Nf4!! 14. Nf3 Nxg2!! :

But even after 1 billions nodes Stockfish still thinks that 12.Nxe5?? is good for white :-(
Not every run but very often, Stockfish can't refute 12.Nxe5??

With Nxe5 Nxe5; Rxe5 on the board,
SF10 finally finds 13 ... Nf4 14. Nf3 Nxg2 ... at depth 34 (eval -0.20, which becomes -0.56 at depth 35).

depth=35
-0.56 13...Nf4 14.Ne4 Ng6 15.Rxe7 Qxe7 16.Be3 Bxe4 17.dxe4 c6 18.Qg4 Rfe8 19.Qf5 Ne5 20.f3 Qf6 21.Qxf6 gxf6 22.Kf2 Kg7 23.h4 h5 24.Bb6 Rab8 25.Bc7 Rb7 26.Ba5 Rd7 27.a4 Ng6 28.Bc3 Nxh4 29.axb5 axb5 30.Ra6

Komodo 13.2 (again after Nxe5 Nxe5; Rxe5) finds it at depths in the 20s, but first likes 14... Nxh3, before switching to 14... Nxg2.

It looks like this is not so easy for engines in general to find in the position after 11 moves.

Very strange.

At first I thought this was a pruning issue by SF, but all the alpha-betas struggle here. I even went back to Zappa Mexico II and it couldn't find it either!

Lc0 had no trouble though 8-)

Lc0 Test 60 from a week ago. Avoids 12.Ne5 and if Ne5 is played it sees the line for black within a second:

I’m not sure. It’s cut & paste from Aquarium and it might be a graphical error.

After 1 second Lc0 showed about-0.4 and after 10 seconds
-0.54 IIRC

Between depth 27 & depth 28, it's decided that 14.Ne4 is better for White, so you cannot see from that if after 14.Nf3 it's switched to Nxg2+; but if you put 14.Nf3 on the board:
depth=23
-0.57 14...Nxg2 15.Kxg2 a5 16.c3 Ra6 17.d4 Rg6+ 18.Kh2 Rf6 19.Rxe7 Qxe7 20.Qe1 Qd6+ 21.Ne5 Rg6 22.Qf1 a4 23.Bc2 Rg2+ 24.Qxg2 Bxg2 25.Kxg2 f6 26.Nf3 Re8 27.Bd3 Qd5 28.Bf4 c6 29.Kg3
depth=24

So maybe Komodo 13.2 is doing okay. (It'd need checking whether it stably rejects 12.Nxe5 at the start.)

Maybe the difficulty is because after 14... Nxg2 15.Kxg2

[d]r4rk1/1bpqbppp/p7/1p2R3/8/1B1P1N1P/PPP2PK1/R1BQ4 b - - 0 15

15..a5, allowing the rook lift, is the only move, so at the start you need to see all of ... Nf4; ... Nxg2; ... a5; ... Ra6.
