Regium Chess — Most likely an elaborate SCAM!!

Tomorrow was supposed to be the launch of Regium chess board, an amazing product that moves the pieces using electromagnetism. It connects to all the major platforms and seems to be the perfect electronic chess board.

Now it looks most likely to be a complete scam!

Here's the Chess.com blog that seeded the skepticism:

https://www.chess.com/news/view/update-on-regium-chess

Then there's the LiChess blog post:

There's still the second video that would seems to be impossible to create using "stop motion", but with everything else I'm now too skeptical to take the plunge:

YMMV but proceed with caution!

Steve

P.S. If anyone wants to actually create this product, the market research has already been done for you and there is clearly massive demand!

What they fail to mention is what is so revolutionary about Regium Chess? Like, what can it do that isn't featured in this video of real working hardware?

The electromagnetic movement was the innovation. Up to this point all boards that move the pieces automatically rely on a single motorized magnet with an x-y motor. The moving parts have been notoriously unreliable (and slow) in the legacy systems. In contrast Regium's electromagnetic system has no moving parts and, in theory, is extremely fast at moving the pieces.

I see. I like slow moving pieces myself (in graphical GUIs I have them moving in the slowest setting.)

If this is an elaborate scam!! I am sold, but how do they get my money? Who is going to buy this without independent reviews.

You do have to admit they do CGI very well for a bunch of scammers. If it is a scam. They need to be selling the CGI or stop motion...well done!

It's a Kickstarter project. You have the opportunity to back it and then wait until they develop the product fully.

I really hope it's not a scam but enough valid points have been made to prevented me from partying with any cash until it's been independently reviewed.

For me the hardware is meaningless. Unless the software will work in my apps.
