Komodo 13.3 released

Post by lkaufman » Tue Feb 18, 2020 11:25 pm

We have released Komodo 13.3 at komodochess.com. It is a significant strength improvement over 13.2.5, the last release. In standard mode, the gain is about 15 elo points. Since most of the gains are due to better scaling with more depth, the short searches used by MCTS don't benefit much, so the gain in MCTS mode is just around five elo. Both of these gains may be a bit larger at 40/x type time controls due to fixing a bug in that tc logic that appears to go back many years. Total gains from Komodo 13 (or 13.01 or 13.02) range from 25 to 35 elo depending on mode, threads, and time control. The improvements cover a wide range of issues, including extensions, null move, King Safety, time management, and many more. We expect that this will be the last of the Komodo 13 series, other than any free bugfixes we deem worthwhile. Next major release should be Komodo 14. As usual, Komodo 13.3 is free for subscribers and available for a 20% discount to those who bought Komodo 12 or any later version from us.

Congratulations. Hopefully, the expected gains will hold in rating lists.

Since the estimated 15 elo gain is based on Ordo, it should be a good estimate for CEGT and for FastGM lists which also use Ordo. CCRL uses BayesElo, which tends to compact the Elo numbers, so the best guess on the CCRL lists might be a gain of 12 elo or so. Self-testing is not quite the same as testing against unrelated engines, but we do also test against Stockfish and in general the elo gains against SF are close to the gains in self-testing.

We normally upgrade the free version when we go to a new main version. So perhaps we'll upgrade what we distribute for free when we go to Komodo 14, but that hasn't been discussed yet.

At the very beginning he thanks for the reply. I would like to ask you to change the attempt at issuing free versions for people. Please make available to everyone to the version apart from last paid for people - and in order not to take money from it. So that he isn't amateurish pieces of work from your side.

I remember reading here in Forum that there is a free update for Android. But there has been no update in the Play Store for a long time. Last version is 13.1.

I think their business model is trying to maximize profits (if they made any other version free it'd hurt their sales), since the next version of Komodo that would need to become free has important features (such as one that would make it the strongest free chess engine available when using MultiPV) they might want to delay the point it becomes free as much as possible, for those people that are willing to pay money for them, but wouldn't if the free version already has those features.

This could be suggested if the Komodo engine was number one in the world. Unfortunately, this is not the case and is far from number 1.

There is not very much money in computer chess. A lot of the money goes into buying more machines to test with (or renting them). If a customer thinks a version is amateurish, they will not buy. We try to do the best work we can, but they can be the judges.

As Larry said we normally make a version a few year older free when we release a new major version number. Many thousands of people seem to like them. I think we will do the same later this year.
