Well, as long as you realize Rodent is a much stronger engine :)
Once I've tweaked Rodent, a 2700 level engine is usually not a bad match.

You see, my priority is usually to create opponents for humans, so I see the 2900/3000 Elo that Rodent has, as a cushion.

It means I have 200-300 Elo I can bear to lose in creating a human-like personality (not only with strengths, but also weaknesses) that matches the human player as closely as possible.

I have heard (through a Dutch reader of my blog who knows him) that Manuel Bosboom himself was impressed with my Rodent "Bosboom" personality...so that's obviously something to be happy about! :)

So I think Benjamin should be a nice match for these guys.

What I do is play at fixed depth, using one where engines take about 10 minutes per game, and reduce the depth of the stronger engine until scores are closer to 50% (what I call "calibration"), this allows the engines to show their true style and the user to see how they win and lose their games.

Okay Ed, I tested your baby in a LTC game and it is truly a brawler.

[d]r1bqkb1r/pp1n1ppp/2n1p3/3pP3/3P4/3B4/PP1NNPPP/R1BQK2R b KQkq - 0 8

My 1st game with Benjamin 1.0 turned into a nice brawl versus Ruffian Leiden 2003 that lasted 269 moves. The opening was a French Defense. By move 29, they reached a position where there was allot of piece shuffling and jockeying for position. At some points it appeared as if the game would result in a draw by the 50 move rule, but then you would see a pawn move that would reset the draw counter again and agian.

[d]2q3k1/p1rn2pp/1rp1p1b1/3pPp2/1P1P1N2/1P3P2/3BQ1PP/R1R3K1 b - - 2 29

The main features I noticed in the position was that Benjamin had a nice space advantage through most of the middle game, with strong control of the c5 square and open A and C files for it's rooks. While black was confined to maneuvering on the last three ranks with it's pieces with it's only real target for attack being white's pawn on h5.

I saw piece trades offered and declined at many points during this protracted middle game phase. The first piece trade came on move 132. Benjamin was able to trade its inferior Bishop for black's strongest knight. The problem Ruffain faced now was as is mainly the case with the French Defense was how to deal with its remaining white squared bishop. On move 153, Benjamin decided to sacrifice it's b4 pawn. This allowed Ruffian to gain counter play on the queenside, primarily on the A and B files. So Benjamin went for counterplay on the kingside with move 161. h6, however Ruffian shut that down with 161. ... g6. Stopping the counterplay at the expense creating further problems for its white squared Bishop.

[d]r3q1k1/p1r2bp1/R1p1p2p/2NpPpnP/1P1P3B/1P3P2/R5PQ/7K w - - 24 131

[d]1r2bqk1/p3r1p1/2p1p3/2NpP1pP/1P1P1pP1/1P1Q1P2/7R/5K1R b - - 19 153

[d]7k/r3qbp1/2p1p2P/prNpP1p1/R2P1pP1/1P3P2/2QK4/7R b - - 0 161

On move 210 Benjamin made a critcal decision to sacrifice another pawn, its pawn on the b-file. On move 212 I believe Benjamin start to go astray with Nd7, but I guess this is what was planned when it decided to sac that b pawn. This allowed Ruffian a passed pawn on the b-file and it looked as if black would now be okay and possibly even winning at this point as Ruffian would go on to capture the d4 pawn giving black three connected passed pawns.

[d]r2q3r/5b1k/2p1p1pP/p1NpP1p1/R2P1pP1/1P3P2/7R/5Q1K w - - 48 209

By move 224, Ruffian sees a opportunity to finally liberate its problem Bishop and plays 224. ... Be8, but I think this was a mistake and the simple c4 may have been better as Benjamin still had some admittedly hard to see counterplay as it involved sacrificing even more pawns! Finally by move 238. ... b2 I could start to see that black was in big trouble.

[d]1r5k/2q2b2/3RpNpP/2ppP1p1/5pP1/1p3P2/1Q4K1/8 b - - 0 224

[d]5k2/2q3r1/3N3R/2p3p1/b2p1pP1/5P2/1p4K1/7Q w - - 0 238

Wonderful creation you have made here with Benjamin 1.0 Ed! These were my notes, I have the game being currently annotated by Stockfish 11 to see the points that I may have missed.

Thanks for the game and commentary! We need more like this instead of rating lists producing hundreds of thousands of games nobody ever looks at...

Hello Robert,

Thanks for sharing that game. On a strategic level I loved the plan with 33. b4 played here.

Image

Then that brilliant 43. Nxa7, commencing that queenside attack was marvelous I thought.

Image

Only to be followed with that wonderful 45. Qxd7!

This type of play brings back memories of studying GM Tal's games.

Is this partly the result of the bishop-rook pattern you wrote about recently? Triumphant victory for the idea if so
