First move I look at is 1...Nf5.
That was my choice too. It's second best, though winning.
Okay you have my attention, I thought Nf5 was the best move also! :D So now it is your turn to enlighten me. What have you discovered, or are you going to make me boot up my engines. :P
Before Louis gives his best move, here's mine: ...Bxh2+
I looked at that but felt it was a bit premature, I will take a second look at it however.

BTW, to make LC0 "see" the real deal of 14...Bxh2+ more quickly than by stand- alone- pondering at starting position only, give in the moves of the output- line above up to 17...Qg5, that will make eval climb more quickly.

Here's LC0 (net 49921)- output after that (14...Bxh2+ 15.Kxh2 Ng6 16.Rh1 Ne5 17.gxh5 Qg5):

[d]r3k2r/p5pp/2p5/2ppn1qP/N3p3/BP1PP3/P1P2P1K/R2Q3R w kq - 0 1

Analysis by Lc0 v0.23.2 2x 2080Ti syzygy:

-+ (-9.18) Depth: 24/51 00:01:24 1958kN

Pity, Backward with LC0 still is some more time- consuming than with SF as for moves, that it doesn't favour on its own. Give it a try and compare.

Well, I would not have able to work all of that out. So while Bxh2+ is indeed the best. I could see the plan more clearly with Nf5 if I had been playing this. Stockfish 11 sees thru all of this quickly. :D

I didn't consider Nf5 at all but would have played Bxh2+ as well :)

zullil wrote: Mon Jan 20, 2020 2:20 pm Well, I chose a winning move, but apparently not the "best" move.
Yes, speculative players might find it quickly. Might depend on the mood you are in at the time. The 'best' move is very nice indeed. :D
Ted, before your later post clarified it, I guessed what you were calling very nice indeed might be the castling in the line
... Bxh2+, Kxh2 Ng6, gxh5 Qh4+, Kg2 0-0... !
"Take my knight and I will mate you with queen and rook."

SF10 at depths around 24-25 gives evals that are very close (within 0.1 cp) for Bxh2+ and Nf5. It's only after that that Bxh2+ gets a much better eval.
