32 core Threadripper about 100M NPS

But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Both for SF and AF.
That's quite intimidating, especially at the $1,999 price point. Threadripper 3 seems to require $500 motherboards however, so it is still a reasonably expensive computer. Standard desktops, like Ryzen 3950x (16-cores for $750) and Ryzen 3900x (12-cores for $550) are clearly better in price/performance. Their motherboards are also less than 1/2 the cost of Threadripper motherboards.

A network of desktop CPUs is still more operations/second than something like a Threadripper. What Threadripper gets the programmer is a giant, cache-coherent set of RAM. Networked CPUs have to communicate over Ethernet, while Threadripper cores can share RAM (ex: integral to Stockfish's Lazy SMP).

Chess is interesting because of the "obvious" parallelism involved... but also because of the high-degree of communication involved. Parallelism + communication makes it difficult to figure out what the best price/performance system would be.

I guess the 3990 will be $4000 to $5000.

Time is a cost also.

I think the WX boards may have even more PCIe 4 lanes, but it is only a guess and possibly 8 way memory like the server versions
We will find out in December.

I think the really interesting thing is that the 3990, properly equipped, will have about the same NPS as Deep Blue II (which had 480 chess CPUs in it).

Then again, we could double the cores and go here:
https://www.newegg.com/supermicro-mbd-h ... lsrc=aw.ds

Or even put in 7742 or 7H12 CPUs instead.
I think that board with the 7H12 CPUs would do 500M NPS.
Fun time to be alive.

It can't be a lot more than $4000 or we will just do this:
https://www.newegg.com/supermicro-mbd-h ... 6813183689
and have a boatload of PCIe lanes.

From the look of it though, you can only put 3 double wide GPUs in that one.

I find myself wondering how strong a 2019 IBM chess machine would be.

Now that they are here, give it a couple months to see if there are any issues with the new chips or MOBOs. Whining about the early pains of every new release gets old.

Personally I'm waiting for 3990X official pricing before making any decisions while I scour the technical forums for show stopping problems.

This benchmark is with an un-tuned system and show the bottom end of what you should expect.

This Benchmark seems to be from a well tuned systems and is near the upper end of what can be expected. It's interesting that the 3970X seems to be capable of 110M nps which is higher than what I had thought likely.

If you can find the 3950X for MSRP and pair it with a B450 motherboard you can maximize the price to performance ratio. For many people this would make an excellent compromise system while staying with in a “reasonable” budget. Properly configured this should yield right at 60M nps.

I think the the 3970X is priced too high. The 3960X price seems more reasonable. The cost of the sTRX4 MB's is high but should come down some what in a few months. They will still be comparatively expensive however.

I tried to buy one this morning but wasn't able to. I do have a line on some at a slight premium over MSRP. But I think I will just wait for a bit.
