Are there any major Android Apps that support Winboard Protocol Engines?

Post by adams161 »

I've been getting some criticism in reviews that my Pulsar Chess engine on android, https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... e&hl=en_US , is not also a stand alone and can't for example be run in DroidFish.

I'm now trying to explain it's not a UCI engine and was developed for the Winboard Protocol due to its support of variants. I"ve not released a stand alone in the Winboard protocol for Android partly because I've not seen anyone who supports that on android of major apps. Anyone know of anyone who does and do any support not just chess but variants?

I don't want to release some jacked up chess only version of pulsar in UCI just so they can run it in Droidfish. I don't see that Droidfish runs Winboard Protocol engines. It was developed for the Winboard Protocol because that is the protocol that supports the full engine. I've heard of like atomic stockfish and I don't know if that is UCI or what but its not in the official UCI standard that I've seen any variant support and I've not seen apps that support UCI also support any chess variants over that UCI protocol so far.

It doesn't support variants, though, AFAIK.

Variant Stockfish is still UCI. We adopted an extension of the UCI protocol for handling variants, through a UCI_Variants option, and a possible "info string variant ..." reply to it for configuring the GUI. AFAIK only the UCI2WB adapter and the CuteChess GUI support that, though. And I don' think either of those is available for Android.

@HGM Nebiyu has an adroid app that should make you happy! It has all those variants with the alien-winboard protocol.

@adams161 I have an android app for winboard engines here. https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... d&hl=en_US
You should be able to install winobard engines in AlienBoard and use them instead of what is already provided.

Thanks supersharp! CfA indeed supports the Chess Engine Communication Protocol (a.k.a. WinBoard and XBoard) but, as HG correctly stated, only chess, no variants.
