Is it possible to play Shogi without the drop rule?

Play Shogi the same way as in normal chess, without crazyhouse drop.

I believe Shogi was originally played without drops, and a larger board variant without drops, chu-shogi, survives. I suspect that the normal version without drops is too drawish to be a good game.
