My feedback---now I know whose house to rob for chess-related hardware. And what to look for. :D

+1 haha

Did I mention that I have a mixed Beagle-Chihuahua who doesn't like strangers, particularly one who is looking to rob his master's most prized possessions ... I would be afraid ...

That's QLC (4-bits per cell), are you cool with that? I'd rather go with TLC (3-bits per cell), which is better tested. QLC is new tech, so we really don't have good numbers on the long-term reliability of that. It is a good bit cheaper, but... I'd like to leave the testing to other people.

* $260 for 2TB TLC, such as an EX950 (https://www.newegg.com/hp-ex950-2tb/p/N82E16820326181).

It seems a bit odd to me to save $80 on storage: if QLC turns out to be less durable (or otherwise has other problems) compared to TLC, the $80 you save here would be very annoying to fix. As a rule of thumb, I NEVER cheap out on primary storage. I'd use the Intel 660p as a "secondary" drive at best, but never actually store important data (ie: OS) on it.
Wired Network Adapter:
Intel E1G42ETBLK PCIe x4 1000 Mbit/s Network Adapter $48.00

Wireless Network Adapter:
Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I PCIe x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter $34.88
Do you want to use up a PCIe slot for that, when USB slots would be sufficient? 1000MBit and WiFi are pretty slow all else considered, I'd personally want to keep the PCIe slots open for future expansion. USB-C is 5gbps, although usually through the Southbridge. But I don't expect that to be an issue typically: how much network bandwidth do you really need?

The Gigabyte X399 AORUS PRO ATX TR4 Motherboard only has x16 slots on it. So you're going to eat up 16x lanes for that WiFi adapter (even though the WiFi adapter needs only 1x lane).

You could use RAID0 NVMe into a x16 slot for example: https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/eight ... 8-gbs.html. Maybe not now, but in the future (something that fast probably needs custom programming / configuration for the tablebase :D :D )

That[s exactly why I requested feedback - your input is very much appreciated! ( I built my own PCs 20 to 25 years ago - but everything has changed since then).

Actually, consider the x399 Taichi motherboard: https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X399%20Taichi/index.asp

It has 2x 1Gbps Ethernet NICs + Intel 802.11ac WiFi built into the motherboard already. The main issue with the Taichi is that it needs 2x 4-pin power connectors (which is a bit unusual).

-----------

This was a 1st gen motherboard. I dunno if it would work with the new stuff, but maybe you can find other motherboards with a similar feature.

Just FYI, I have confirm with people that are usually in the know , that they believe a 64 Core Threadripper will be announced on October 7, 2019. Apparently , the 7th is big deal with these new chips for obvious reasons.

I hope you're right but the 3950x was supposed to come out on the 7th of September and it wasn't
