a strange analysis by stockfish

Post by Uri Blass »

I analyze one of my old correspondence games and I do not understand how can stockfish see main line as
55.Rb7 Bc4 56.Rb6+ Be6 without returning a draw score.

I can understand that it may be better not to evaluate repetitions as a draw if we are talking about reptition of old positions of the game because it is possible that the only way to win is by going to previous position but I do not understand how it is possible to suggest a line that go back not to previous position but to the root position without returning a draw score.

Note that I used contempt 0

Here is the full game when I guess that I was objectively losing but saved a draw

I assume you do not like, that white cycles back to the root position once. I have briefly checked the source code and as far as i understand, this has something to do with the implementation of cycle detection in stockfish. Notice that there are no cycles targeting nodes under the root and that stockfish does not cycle twice to the root, this is properly avoided.

Guess that's lost for Black, isn't it?

After some Forward- Backward with 6 men Syzygys:

Pity very long till fail highs get solved to next iteration, had to leave and paste that for now but will let it go on running.

And for sure there are rather long ways to 7 men positions, but no danger of 50 moves with the many pawn- moves possible anyhow.

Still don't know, why there has to be so much shuffling in output- lines before finally a pawn moves arises, yet continuing the lines a little longer onwards always leads to won 7 men positions soon.

That means with a bit of forward/backward analysis you outsmarted an iccf GM easily in a few minutes. He must have been extremly busy during that tournament game...

Forward/backward analysis isn't even needed here. Stockfish-dev with 6-man tables finds a tablebase win in a direct search from the root position in about 7.5 minutes:

The game was played in 2005. Much better hardware and software now.

I know, I just went into the lines to see the Losomosov- positions asap and take the way to them backward in hash, not so much as for evals, but for moves in output.
And I hoped to skip some shuffling in that way, which didn't really work here as much as I had hoped for.
Peter.
