I still did not buy a new computer.
Today I went to a shop and they told me that they can sell me only
AMD Ryzen 9 3700X and not AMD Ryzen 9 3900X so I wonder what is the speed difference between them.
How much faster is CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12 Core relative to 3700?

But I had a medical procedure done in which I was put under so I was groggy most of the day and I didn't see the notification until this morning. By that time they were out of stock again.
I have seen only one chess benchmark on the 3700X. IIRC it was around 23.5M nps. But they didn't give much data as to what the configuration was or the condition under which the test was run so I didn't pay it much attention. It seemed a little slower than I expected. 27-29M nps seems likely on a well optimized 3700x system. Compare this to a 3900X at 40-44M nps. 40M nps at 3.8 ghz base clock on all cores and around 44M nps at 4.2Ghz all core.
If I were forced to buy/build a system now, I think I would get a Ryzen 5 3600 and then when the 3900X or 3950X's becomes available I would simply swap it for the 3600. But, that's just me. Many people would be hesitant to do such things.

Do you suggest that the difference in speed between 3600 and 3700 is small but the difference in price is high so it is better to buy 3600 and not 3700?

Unless you need a new system right now. It would be better to wait until the 3900x is more available.
Here are the stats.
CB r 20 score (Cinebench is a good benchmark. When looking at what CPU is best for running chess engines)
3900x 1 thread score 502.
3700x 1 thread score 482
3900x is 4.1% faster.
3900x multi thread score 7155
3700x multi thread score 4760
3900x is 50.3% faster.

Unless he decides to not buy at all? Once a I had the money to buy a decent GPU for Leela I decided to buy a 40-inch TV instead.
And, man, it's hard to regret when it has much better blacks and rich colors than my old 32-inch TV. It's as if most of the improvements of the TV weren't related to its size (though, since then I haven't gone to a movie theater anymore, so perhaps this size is "big enough".)

my guess is that with 8 cores it will see just under 30M SF bench nps , and with using hyperthreading with 15 threads , it may see about 40 M nps ( I can be off plus or minus 10% since each system is different) Based on recent Geekbench integer scores ( the best chess proxy for A/B engines)

Edit - I have seen Ryzen 5 3600 complete systems for $1000 , 6 cores should do about about 22M mis in SF bench and with using 11 threads , should be around 27M nos. based on Geekbench integer scores as a proxy

just noticed, the Ipman has some 3900X's on his website - looks like I may have over estimated nps by 20% on all of the above. Not really sure.

I'm waiting to see the pricing and throughput for next gen Threadripper. I'm hoping for a 64 core model - having cores is critical for testing.

No need to wait on new systems. The 2-year old 7980XE is still the fastest single CPU system. See Ipman.

No need to wait on new systems. The 2-year old 7980XE is still the fastest single CPU system. See Ipman.
The 9980XE is even faster because it can reach higher clocks. Maybe the 7980XE was decapped with a cooler directly onto the silicon, I don't know.
Pretty soon Intel will release the 10980XE for half the cost of the 7980XE, this processor will make the 3950X look pale in comparison.
