On June 16 2019 Cock de Gorter, former chairman of the CSVN, has passed away at 70. According to the little information I received, he was already ill for some time. He is well-known for the organisation of the Aegon tournaments in the nineties, computer chess opening books and reviews of computers and programs. On the CSVN website you can find a copy of the announcement in the newspapers (https://www.csvn.nl/index.php/verenigin ... -overleden)

May he rest in peace.

This is a very sad news.
I met cock de gorter at the aegon tournaments in den Haag.
He was a very nice guy, friendly. Honorable. Always giving his best for computerchess.
I remember a scene at the tournament in Paderborn where I had to operate chess system tal.

There was another program, hiarcs, normally operated by another guy.
But for unknown reasons he was not in the tournament hall when
Ferret had to play hiarcs. He was still sleeping in the hotel krawinkel.
I saw Bruce Moreland press the clock after making 1.e4 and it was ticking against hiarcs.

When I saw this I tried to operate both programs and made moves on the chess system tal computer and on the hiarcs tournament machine,
So hiarcs could not run out of time.
Cock de gorter, sitting in the audience, saw that Bruce complained because I was normally operating another program. Bruce was nearly short before exploding. Cock instantly stand up, went from the audience to the hiarcs machine and , sat down there, his pipe in his hand, quietly and polite as he was, he operated hiarcs until the original operator came from he hotel room and continued the game.

For him it was no question what to do. No discussion. He saw a difficult situation arising and cleared the problematic situation. No words, no big gestures,

This was the way cock handled the aegon tournament in The Hague too.

the friendly and polite cock de gorter as I will have him in my memories.

A sad day for computerchess.

Wiki""The Aegon Man–Machine Tournaments (1986–1997)[edit]
The 12 Aegon Man–Machine Tournaments were held annually from 1986 to 1997. The Dutch Computer Chess Federation (CSVN) organized the Aegon Man–Machine Tournaments in The Hague, Netherlands. The Aegon insurance company hosted the tournaments. An equal number of humans and computers played a 6 round swiss tournament with all games between humans and computers. The early tournaments were mostly local players and anti-computer tactics specialists. Later tournaments included masters and grandmasters. In the early tournaments, humans won more games. In the later tournaments, computers won more games.

100 players played in the 1997 tournament. Computers won 151 ½ points. Humans won 148 ½ points. Yona Kosashvili scored highest for the humans at 6 points out of 6 games. Kallisto scored highest for the computers at 4 ½ points.[9]

Cock suffered from brain cancer. Radiation and chemo in the end did not help. At his 70e birthday he gave a party for his closest friends to (as he said) celebrate his life. As he told me, never lose your sense of humor.

RIP

Condolences to Trudy his lovely wife.

So many people go. We liked. We will miss.
Let's hope we can all do computer chess in heaven...
And we see us all again. Miss all the ones who have gone. Cock and Don.

This makes me really sad. :(

Cock and I developed a friendly online relationship, mainly due to our shared interest in the Chessmasters.

Condolences to Cock's wife.
