Nice Mate in 4 that I missed at the finish line

Post by AdminX »

Here is a Nice Mate in 4 that I missed at the finish line playing Blitz on LiChess. I would blame the clock, but the truth is after I won a major exchange I let my guard down and blew a nicer finish.  Craps happens sometimes.

White's last move (20. Na4??) was a blunder.

I can find a mate, but not in 4.

Isn't it a slightly longer mate?

Bf2+ Qxf2 Nh5+ Kxg4 Qxf2 and although White is getting mated in a few moves the immediate mate (Rh4#) can be prevented with a knight move

Ahh ... You are correct. I over looked that. So it was really a Mate in 5.

Mate-in-6 actually, if White plays Nh3 to prevent Rh4#.

No, I was thinking

20. ... Bf2+
21. Qxf2 Nh5
22. Kxg4 Qxf2
23. Nf3 Qg3+
24. Kf5 g6#

Yes, if Nh3 it's mate in 6

My answer: you checked it on CPU-based Lc0, but not on SF.

Oh so wrong, at my age even doing that might lead to early onset 'Alzheimers', don't want to start turning my brain off just yet even if I get it wrong. :)
