Right, but "... and therefore equally good" does not follow from that, e.g.: 1.Bxa5?? bxa5 2.Nxa5+ Ka6 3.Nc4 {Nc6 is not better} Bf7! 4.Re1 Bxd5 {sacrificing one "useless" bishop to activate the other one} 5.exd5 e4 6.dxe4 Qa1+ 7.Ke2 Qc3 -+ {Black is winning in all variants}
Yes, but, I do realise here is to be hopelessly outnumbered by people with engine main lines, often a gazillion moves deep. I don’t take an interest in what a computer search finds, I do take an interest in the positional features.
Isn’t the thing about this position the positional/material? So why would, let’s say a NN evaluation on the position, after it has been opened up a few moves with the shown lines, not be relatively equivalent for Bxa5, b4, Rb2 and so on .....? NN’s should be sniffing this out after a few moves by evaluation, A/B needs long variations, the “sniffing” part, I find the interesting bit.

Yes, but, I do realise here is to be hopelessly outnumbered by people with engine main lines, often a gazillion moves deep. I don’t take an interest in what a computer search finds, I do take an interest in the positional features.

So why would, let’s say a NN evaluation on the position, after it has been opened up a few moves with the shown lines, not be relatively equivalent for Bxa5, b4, Rb2 and so on .....? NN’s should be sniffing this out after a few moves by evaluation, A/B needs long variations, the “sniffing” part, I find the interesting bit.
I understand your thoughts. But the positional theme of b4 and Rb2 is to open the b-file for the rook and play with rook, knight and a-pawn vs the king and some misplaced black pieces. The positional theme of Bxa5, though, is not the same since the b-file remains closed and the white rook(s) more or less inactive. By capturing twice on a5 White also loses time helping Black to improve its position. A "sniffing NN" should be sensitive to this as well.

agreed, the b-file and tempo are important here, I wasn’t so much expecting a NN to include tempo, or even necessarily the b-file, figuring it would like the weight of material plus passed pawn on the qside and the relative uselessness of the black bishops (we have to imagine what it is in this position it is generalising). I don’t know, is an NN generalising time advantage within the poor spatial arrangement of the black pieces (similar to the other thread this week, Nf8, Rh8 and all the pawns blocking an N move), or is it generalising time advantage as a concept in itself? And then is the NN melding the time advantage with the b file rooks? It’s a conundrum - what does it mean to “know” a pattern.

After some Forward-Backward of both lines, depth 37.

Not much problem for CorChess to find one of them with empty hash started in sinlge variant mode neither, getting winning eval into output soon too.

CFish took a little longer, 2 minutes 14" at a single try with 24 threads of 12x4GHz and 32 G hash.
After a deep run, I now get to +5,90 8-) But after Rb2 first, it is also possible to miss b4 altogether and allow a fortress position, see also topic I started on Fishcooking I don't know if anyone will run a test, but Kaissa is using this small code change in scalefactor now. It is very possible it does more bad than good on average... But present rule does not look right. So it was just something to look into for the Stockfish coders 8-) Maybe they can come up with something better.

Found it using my Dell laptop and Leela with Network ID '128x10-se-distill-ccrl-11248.pb', it has an MX150 Nvidia GPU. It took an hour to find, sure it would have found it sooner if I had been using my desktop Nvidia GPUs.
