I don't understand, such a great tournament and then such a poor PGN support?

Has CCC3 stage 2 and 3 ever been played? Can't find the PGN's, nor information.

Now Stockfish is playing Antifish and the download tournament PGN isn't working.

What a pity.

True Ed. You must look site 24/7 not to miss results :). What happened in previous tournaments?? But some wrote in chat, that Stockfish had won ALL serious tournaments in last 2-3 years. So SF was probably winner..

I find even during the match, the only way to see/download games is to look at the crosstable and select them from there. Seems not optimal.

Another comment (and I do appreciate the tourney): the openings are sometimes quite unbalanced. I understand that seeing a whole series of draws is something maybe they want to avoid, but if you look at the evals, quite a few games have one side with a significant plus very early on, and the eval curve just keeps on going up. So that indicates to me that the opening is likely only good for one side. TCEC also tries for unbalanced openings to some extent but I don't see this phenomena there so much.

It is my opinion that for a tournament where the objective is to understand engine strength (and not a book tournament like Sedat's) every book exit point should be analyzed to at least 40 plies by two very strong engines.

If a centipawn evaluation is above 60[*], then it is not a good opening (even though the positions reverse it does not become fair. E.g. Stockfish loses to Texel and then Wins because of reversal, but would more likely have won both or won and drawn).

If there is an opening which is statistically desirable, and the centipawn evaluation remains polar, then analyze to 50 plies if you want to include it. If it remains polar, analyze to 60 plies.

IMO-YMMV.

[*] 60 is somewhat arbitrary, but has some reasonable backing. A centipawn evaluation of +60 gave 103018 wins for the side to move, 64147 wins for the opponent, and 70688 draws in my database among high end opponents. That yields 58% of the points.

As long as the opening line is not proven to lose by force, any eval score should be acceptable. I'm wary of artificial and arbitrary thresholds because the engines could be giving a wrong score in any particular opening. After all, isn't that what we're really testing: the strength, and by extension the correctness and reliability of the eval scores, of the engines?

Excluding certain lines of play best on artificial criteria can be unfair to those engines that do play those openings much better than others. For example, take Stockfish and the Black side of the King's Indian, which SF handles better than most. Would you exclude that from testing at Stockfish's expense just because it's scored incorrectly by most engines, (including maybe SF itself)?

We have to accept that engine evaluations are still flawed and we have no perfect evaluation or play yet. That is why we continue to test.

I have seen opening books with checkmate end points used in Elo measuring events.

So, is "down a queen" acceptable? If not, isn't it an arbitrary value just like any other?

Down a pawn is "pawn odds". If you were an engine author, would you like to fall out of book down a pawn?

Komodo, Houdini, Stockfish, Fire, Ethereal...
If they say you are down a pawn after a 40 ply search (or better) then you have a very serious disadvantage and you are probably going to lose.
Now, one engine might say -103 centipawns and the other might say -115 centipawns etc, but you will find after a deep search that they usually agree pretty nearly.

Now, anyone who runs a contest can set it up anyway that they like. But if they do not make an effort to make it fair, then I would not want my engine in the contest if I were an author.

There are gambits that are simply unsound. While it might be fun to watch games with those gambits, it is unfair if used in a contest to measure strength.

Now, my opinion is not any better than yours. But I think a lot of engine writers would agree with me.

Please demonstrate a position where (after a 40 ply search) two top engines both score the position as more than 60 centipawns (positive or negative) and yet the position is fair as far as actual game outcomes.

I do not have a problem with inclusion of an opening which favors a particular engine, unless that inclusion is intended to favor a particular engine (because that sort of thing could be discovered for just about any engine).

The games I was complaining about mostly had both sides with evals in the same general value/direction.

I agree though they differ between engines. Stockfish too I have noticed seems to give some big evals in opening positions but if you push the game another ply forward the evals change quickly. This can happen with any engine but I seem to see it more than with Houdini & Komodo.
