If an engine (such as a modern Stockfish on a 4.4Ghz machine) needs almost a minute for the solution, then the puzzle IS hard... ;-)

You and Vincent Lejeune write the toughest chess problem sets in the world.
The old standards of Nolot, LCT II, etc., are no longer the swords in the stone.
It is the test sets of Walter and Vincent that send shivers down our little problem solving spines.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Very nice one again!
BTW, it seems to be a mate in 37 or a few moves less. Last three aren't to be kept in 32G hash easily anymore, but here's Backward- output at the position after 3...Rd4+:

1N6/2pp1P2/8/p3k3/1pKr1N2/5P1P/8/8 w - - 0 1

Of course of no meaning at all for a study, that isn't a mate in x- problem, just for even more horror- fun.
:)
Happy Halloween!

Edit: Yet couldn't resist to finish the Backward anyhow:

Still would lay my bets rather on #37, any other findings from other mate- solvers?
:)
Will let it run a little longer with full hash and will come back later maybe.

Hi Peter,

What is this "recent" (?) asmFish ?

For me, the latest asmFish patches have a date of end of June, and the latest asmFish version cannot be related to any of the Stockfish devs... (well, I guess everything has an end, despite brave attempts !)

Guess you know that thread, since you wrote there too:

So, if you don't think it does continue the development, have a look at latest versions and compiles from the link given by Guenther Simon then already too.

As for my personal pov, asmFish is much further up to date to SF dev. now, than it was in June with Antonov's latest versions.
Peter.
