What do you mean with wide search?

Tactial 8 is too much, I'd try 3, which is internal MV8, as far as I know. Waiting already 6 minutes in depth 33 now without solution, don't know, how long I'll let it run.

Switching off nullmove could help in single variant mode, but would cost too much time to depth probably in MV.

CorChess at 24 threads of the 12x3GHz CPU with 32G hash, Analysis Contempt off, started in 8MV- mode has the Queen-sac in first ranked one lines quickly.
Keeping all primaries computed onwards then, of course takes it's time too to bring the winning eval and line.
Much more quickly it works by reducing MV to the best ones, but that's somewhat self-betraying, you could just do Forward- Backward as well then, to get the winning eval as soon as possible.

After Sting, which really is a category of its own here once again, CorChess seems to me one of the second best ones at this one position, which is a very selective one indeed.

At least McCain is rather good in Backwarding the lines after the Queen-sac, which isn't so for all engines, even modern ones, neither. E.g. komodo does better with switched off nullmove. There's much Zugzwang in several lines. Accordingly McCain does better with switched off nullmove here too.

It seems that the point of my previous post didn't come across. The player of the black pieces was not the well-known GM Yuri Averbakh, neither was this game played in 1951. Moscow being the venue is most likely wrong as well.

This was covered by E. Winter in Chess Notes, issue #8405, five years ago. Since then the chessgame.com sleuths appear to have established the venue as Chelyabinsk; only Auerbach's first name remains unknown. It may have been Yevgeni, Eduard, Yegor, Ernest or Erich.

That's Ayler Kupp's analysis, not mine. Although I put in at least a hundred hours of analysis with various engines on Let's Check (sadly, later on most of it around the root position has been superseded by patzers blindly running dumb engines overnight on single positions) into numerous lines springing after the queen sacrifice I don't think I had a close look at that particular one. You must admit that 25...Rc8 and 26...Rc7 don't make much sense. It was atypically unconvincing analysis by Ayler who is usually much more thorough -- I'd learned the backsliding (what you refer to as Forward-Backward) technique from him, BTW. In another discussion elsewhere he frankly admitted to dropping the ball, misled by SF DD's high depths.

I guess I should have used this link to begin with rather the one to the general game page; but I'd thought you'd want to look through that thread from the beginning, there's much interesting stuff including analysis posted there, unlike the typical trite CG.com noise, around the same time the position was hotly debated here (which I backreferenced in my later posts there, BTW).

Normal search, 7 hours and McCain got unstuck , not surprised - I felt it would take nearly a trillion nodes and it did. There are scores of positions that SugaR handles better than any other engine. Clearly SugaR has been one of the most useful forks, if not the most useful fork of SF ever created. I am very appreciative it exists.
