Plaskett's Chess Puzzle Solved in ~15 minutes

Post by MikeB » Fri Oct 26, 2018 3:26 am

Code written by Günther Demetz ( pb00068 on Github ) and Michael Stembera (mstembera on Github) in a collaborative effort by these two extremely talented and valued Stockfish programmers led to to this latest improvement in McCain.

First I knew it was getting close when McCain was able to solve a precursor position :
I ran it twice and it was solved both times, although the first run was quite a bit shorter
All of the runs below were straight runs, clean starts and no back and forth on a 2010 MacPro with 12 cores and 16 GB hash. 23 threads were used for each run.

Latest McCain Code is available on Github for McCain 10.1 , exe's will be available within a few days.

https://github.com/MichaelB7/Stockfish

The master branch has the code - as a reminder , from the one source, you can build McCain, McCain w Mate finder, Stockfish with features ( Cerebellum book, play by elo , Stockfish with Matefinder and straight dev-stockfis. The various makefile examples are also on Github and include the bench nodes for each version. The Matefinder code is directly from Joe Ellis' Matefinder fork but it does not include all of his Matefinder patches. All changes from dev-Stockfish code are marked with "#ifdef xxxx" and source attributed.

Also there were few bug fixes as well, none by the SF team, these were all my doing.

Here is a link to an archive with McCain 10.1 64 bit binaries in it.
Compiled for popcount only, with McCain and McCain matefinder executables.

Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

komodo solved it in 2010 in 6.3 seconds on a old hardware of that time
so if people did a special version of stockfish not in order to play but in order to solve chess problems then I find 15 minutes to be a very poor result

Probably some special code too?

Again 3 times tried, shown one had the longest TTS.

And then we have Sting of course, still under 3 minutes at same hardware to stay stable on solution, 8G hash (max. to be used). This one was a single try.

Sting is at once on the author's more beautiful but yet much shorter solution up to the first 4 moves, even if 5.Kd5 doesn't really work, so for somewhat wrong reasons still, then leaving 1.Nf6+ , taking some more time to see 5.Ke6 after 4...Kf7+ and 4...Kg4 losing too at the longer but not so beautiful line.

Uri, have you tried it on a recent version of Komodo or any other of the top few engines?
You won't see this result.

I suspect it was just luck or due to engine parameters which make it better for some positions but worse
for 100s of others.

Engines in your thread which find this quick would be many 100s of elo weaker than the top engines.
McBrain is within a few 10s elo of the top engines, so having this and solving hard problems is
impressive!
