Strange Komodo opening in CCCC2 Blitz vs. Pedone

Post by Guenther »

5...Be4? and 6...c5?? are strange and Black is already lost here.
BTW is the depth 20-22 really expected for that hardware?
(not that this will excuse such weird moves, just wondering)

weird indeed, although Komodo gets quite a visually good atacking position, and holds it for a while. If AZ had played these moves?
perhaps Komodo is just being over speculative. is this a new version with an agressive king attack function?
or, maybe there is something in the position? why did Komodo give itself a draw score for c5 .....

Whom are you replying to?
Which questions in this thread should it answer?

Do you mean the 'low speed' answer in blitz on a lot of threads?
This does not explain those moves though, they should not pop up at depth 20-22 too...

The regular K12.1.1 on 10 cores/1GB hash/everything default stays with 5...Be4 until d=17 and doesn't consider anything but 6...Bg6.

Remarkably enough, it picks 6...c5 as the top move at Multi-PV=2 and doesn't change its mind until d=24.
Of course neither this nor Larry's post explain the manifestly low depths achieved in this game. The 10 cores @2.93 GHz of the old Sandy Bridge I'm typing this on give you d=22 within 3-5 seconds at that stage of the game.

The opening itself is playable, although 6...c5 should only be tried vs. humans or engines several hundred Elo lower. Still, the universally praised positional wizard Komodo is far from infallible in openings: 3...e6 is clearly inferior to 3...Bxb1. The idea behind 2...Bf5 (Baltic/Janowski Defence) is to take advantage of White somewhat passive 2.Nf3 and exchange off the potentially "bad" light-squared bishop against White's b1 knight which normally puts pressure on d5. But Komodo thinks that after 3...Bxb1 4.Rxb1 White is +1.00 (d=30).
