AMD Threadripper 2990x seems out what is the gain vs 1950x ?

Hello all,

It seems the AMD Threadripper 2990x is out and there are already several reviews/tests.....
I have however not been able to see any benchmark using chess engines such as Stockfish or Komodo or Fritz....

If any of you find something on it, looking forward on what you can share.

The 2990x seems to perform ~65% better than the 1950x for chess.

Seems like a very good idea.
Compared to the server boxes I am running right now, it would be much less electricity and heat.
Not to mention a lot quieter.

I wonder how well it overclocks.

Afaik it doesn't overclock very well without generating an enormous amount of heat, Intel processors usually have more headroom.
Another drawback is that PEXT/PDEP uses a lot of cycles on the Zen+ architecture, and that is a pity because you can do very interesting things with these. On the other hand you'll get a lot of computing power without having to give up an arm and a leg.

Yes, they managed to get it running on 5.1 GHz. with LN2 cooling, but that is not very useful for everyday work.
Personally I would be happy with 4GHz. all-core with air-cooling, for chess you only use the integer units, that means the chip will never be used at 100% load.

The scaling is a bit dissapointing, when you glue 2x 2950x together you would expect more 65% increase in performance. This is probably due to the NUMA architecture, most chess engines are unable to handle this correctly. If Intel releases a 28 core chip that can run at 4Ghz. with SMP instead of NUMA I will probably go for that (if it is not to expensive, but with Intel you never know).

The 32 core threadripper also has stunted memory access.
I was rather surprised that it did so well on chess.
It seems that benchmarks for performances are hit or miss, sometimes even falling below the 16 core chip, depending on the task.

Liquid Nitrogen will not be used by the vast majority of people. If you buy Intel it will be expensive.
