mate test positions

Post by Uri Blass » Sun Jul 29, 2018 11:18 am

Positions are taken from human-human games from the games of the bottom of the first WCCC correspondence championship

see https://www.iccf.com/event?id=38834

I simply took the position when one side resigned and went backward until I got 2 positions in a row when I could not prove a mate score.
I plan to increase the size of the test and it may be interesting if people can find shorter mate or alternative solutions or better solutions for the existing positions.

I am not convinced that the mate that I found is the shortest but I ordered the positions based on the shortest mate that I found in analysis.
The easy positions can be solved in few seconds when the hard positions may need a long time to solve when I am not sure if the top engines can find the shortest mate or if I found the shortest mate with the help of engines.

I am not sure if all the mates are correct and engines may also have bugs and maybe I did a mistake.

Here are the positions

All the mates in 13 or less than it are verified by chest(not sure if there is a way to verify mate against a player by chest so did not try it).

Longest analysis by chest was for the following mate when most of the time was to verify that other moves except Rc7+ do not lead to mate.

Here are the positions

positions when I did not find a mate score but 1 or 2 plies later I found a mate score.

Thanks.
I do not know but there is a good chance that it is minimal.
It is also possible that it is wrong and there is not a mate in 27 because I am not sure that stockfish does not have bugs but I never found a case when stockfish claimed mate and I could prove that there is no mate(something that I found to be surprising because of knowing that stockfish decided to take a relatively big risk of hash collisions in one of the patches).

It may be good if somebody can generate a tree that to convince people that it is not mate in more than 27 moves.
In other words in every move of black show all the alternatives that lead to mate in more than 10 moves and continue the lines with move of white until all the options of black lose in 12 moves or less than it(mate in 12 or shorter mate can be later usually verified by chest).

You seem to have found many shorter mates than I did, and more mates that I did.

I would be interested to know what tools you used to analyze the positions and how long you analyzed them for.
I would also like to see the original games in PGN format, if that is possible.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Re: mate test positions

Post by Uri Blass » Fri Aug 03, 2018 9:29 am

I used more than an hour for the long mates and also used going backward and forward in the analysis in some cases that helped me to find shorter mates.
I used mainly stockfish but I verified all the short mates by chest.
