Don't expect to match that OC, I wonder how many chips they fried before completing the bench.

This is very interesting news. It sounds very powerful if it really can run at 5 ghz and not melt. Something to look forward to in the CPU market this year.

Yes, this is an important question to those of us looking to reduce our gas bills in winter by utilizing this 5GHz wonder as an auxiliary heating unit! Too bad that most won't be able to afford it for years to come.Werewolf wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 6:23 pmAnd the heat output is...?mjlef wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 4:50 pm Me want:

regarding moore's law. how long has it taken for ghz to double from 2.5 ghz. 5 years or more ?mjlef wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 4:50 pm Me want:

GHz is basically irrelevant.duncan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 8:34 pmregarding moore's law. how long has it taken for ghz to double from 2.5 ghz. 5 years or more ?mjlef wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 4:50 pm Me want:

The important measure is compute power per dollar.
If you examine what the GPU cards can do, then progress isn't just exponential, it's super-exponential.
If you do not wish to consider the GPU cards (which have limits due to their problem domain), then consider the AMD threadripper CPUs.
Their horsepower does not come from GHz but from core/thread count.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

do the AMD threadripper CPUs benefit any tasks which parallelisation would not helpDann Corbit wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 12:39 amGHz is basically irrelevant.duncan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 8:34 pmregarding moore's law. how long has it taken for ghz to double from 2.5 ghz. 5 years or more ?mjlef wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 4:50 pm Me want:

No, but those are mostly trivial tasks.
Most really hard tasks have a parallel nature.
