Maybe there are chances for Black to build up a fortress yet, but I don't think so.

Interesting position anyhow.

About test postions generally speaking:
Problem to me is always only to collect positions of certain level of difficulty for automatic suites to judge by move "found or not found".

Judging eninges' outputs and evals otherwise can be done with certain solution- lines instead as well as with any position of interest.

Tactical ones, "positional" ones, best moves, avoid moves, winning ones, drawing ones and such you don't know the outcome as for full or half points neither.

It all depends on the way of testing and judging, hash- learning to me should be a criterium once and again also.

But that's just my pov of course.

Stockfish and all of its variants is able to manufacture very convincing fortresses when no fortress exists.
So I am testing the position with alternative engines.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Hi Dann!

There isn't any fortress.
Made a little .pgn interactively with CFish and full Syzygys. Evals at the ends of the lines as comments are from the engine having had some more Forward-Backward. Those should be reproducible with good hardware and enough hash at least to the positions commented.

With 30. ..h5 black destroys his fortress.
Better is 30. ..Be6. After this move I cannot see any progress.

Instead of hopping in at the end of output lines, try this, Bernhard:

http://talkchess.com/forum3/viewtopic.p ... 21#p763821

If you then still get from the starting position a drawing line only , let's discuss yours.
You should be able to reproduce mine with some Forward- Backward and at least should be able to get "Bingo- Evals" of hits of won tablebase positions at the given ends of the .pgn- lines.
Not to have to discuss positions after 30 moves, let's stick to the first 15 ones, after those everything should be clear with full Syzygys.

So the score is -3.04 and I cannot see your 15. Ra7 {132.6/61 CFtbs}
Sorry.
Could you give a winning line?
Kind regards
Bernhard

PS: In the line I metioned 11. ..Kh7 is a blunder. 11. ..Kf7 holds the draw. As mentioned before, do not push pawns for obvious reasons.

I folowed your line up to the following position after 15. Ra7 {132.6/61 CFtbs}
6k1/R5p1/5p1p/3b1K2/3B4/8/8/8 b - - 19 15
Here sf gives
FEN: 6k1/R5p1/5p1p/3b1K2/3B4/8/8/8 b - - 19 15

St-orig-18-05-17:

Instead of your (output's) 15...Bc4 16.Bc5 Bd5 17.Re7 (which might work still but is the earliest deviation and I hope to get you a shortest line you can reproduce) 17.Rc7.

So

r5k1/R5p1/p4p1p/1p1b1P2/8/4B3/2B2K2/8 w - - 0 1

1. Bb3 Bxb3 2. Rxa8+ Kh7 3. Rxa6 Bc2 4. Rb6 b4 5. Rxb4 Bxf5 6. Rb5 Bh3 7. Kf3
Bc8 8. Bg1 Bh3 9. Ra5 Be6 10. Kf4 Kg6 11. Rb5 Kh7 12. Rb7 Bc4 13. Bd4 Kg8 14.
Kf5 Bd5 15. Ra7 Bc4 16. Bc5 Bd5

and then

6k1/R5p1/5p1p/2Bb1K2/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Cfish Tactical 2.0 250518 64 POPCNT NUMA:

At move 24 of this output- line you have already a won 7some position.

Without full Syzygys you'll have to have some more tries probably, but let's just see, maybe you'll get some mating score even without tbs sooner or later. The Lomonosov- position after 24.Kxh5 anyhow is #37 only:

6k1/R5p1/5p2/7K/8/B7/2b5/8 b - -

Kind regards,

P.S. I see you edited you posting in the meantime

Nope, Bernhard, after 11...Kf7 instead of ...Kh7:

8/5kp1/4bp1p/1R6/5K2/8/8/6B1 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Cfish Tactical 2.0 250518 64 POPCNT NUMA:

BTW you saw the output with 132.6- eval at the starting position, did you?

And you don't start pondering if your SF at your hardware simply is missing the full Syzygys to make you see you're wrong by yourself, don't you? And or some more hash maybe too?
And or some more patience of yours at going the lines forth and back?
:)
Peter.

Eelco de Groot wrote: Tue May 29, 2018 6:35 pm Sure Bernard, but Dann can't be faulted for not seeing the fortress. I just rely on the output from Stockfish and if Stockfish can't find more than this with a full rook even after checking the end of the PV, no progress at all, I just tend to believe there is nothing more. But the score is still high and if a program does not correct for the opposite color bishops than it can easily be higher still.
I don´t blame Dan for not seeing the fortress, but for not seeing a NON-rising score beyoned a certain level.
And I blame Dan for a short pv.
This position does´t belong in a test-suite.
Kind regards
Bernhard
Bernhard,

There has been nothing kind in your posts at all on this thread. But that is not surprising,

McBrain 9.2, with a clean start, does eventually move off the so called "fortress" score after about 32 minutes.

Peter's analysis , as is typical , is right on.

I folowed your line up to the following position after 15. Ra7 {132.6/61 CFtbs}
6k1/R5p1/5p1p/3b1K2/3B4/8/8/8 b - - 19 15
Here sf gives
FEN: 6k1/R5p1/5p1p/3b1K2/3B4/8/8/8 b - - 19 15

St-orig-18-05-17:
...
52/63 01:36 266.679k 2.749k -3,04 Bd5-c4 Bd4-c5 Bc4-d5 Ra7-e7 Bd5-c4 Bc5-d6 Bc4-b3 Re7-d7 Bb3-c4 Bd6-b4 Bc4-a2 Rd7-d8+ Kg8-h7 Bb4-c5 Ba2-c4 Rd8-d7 Bc4-f1 Kf5-f4 Bf1-h3 Rd7-a7 Kh7-g8 Kf4-e4 Bh3-e6 Bc5-d6 h6-h5 Bd6-c5 Be6-g4 Ra7-a8+ Kg8-h7 Ra8-a4 Kh7-g8 Ke4-f4 g7-g5+ Kf4-g3 Bg4-e6 Bc5-e7 h5-h4+ Kg3-h2 Kg8-f7 Be7-d8 Kf7-g6 Ra4-a6 Kg6-f7 Kh2-g2 Be6-d5+ Kg2-f2 Bd5-e6 Ra6-d6 g5-g4 Kf2-g2 h4-h3+ Kg2-h2 f6-f5 Bd8-g5 Be6-c8 Rd6-h6 Bc8-d7 Rh6-b6 Bd7-c8 Kh2-g3 Bc8-d7 Rb6-f6+ Kf7-e8 Kg3-h2

So the score is -3.04 and I cannot see your 15. Ra7 {132.6/61 CFtbs}
Sorry.
Could you give a winning line?
Instead of your (output's) 15...Bc4 16.Bc5 Bd5 17.Re7 (which might work still but is the earliest deviation and I hope to get you a shortest line you can reproduce) 17.Rc7.

So

r5k1/R5p1/p4p1p/1p1b1P2/8/4B3/2B2K2/8 w - - 0 1

1. Bb3 Bxb3 2. Rxa8+ Kh7 3. Rxa6 Bc2 4. Rb6 b4 5. Rxb4 Bxf5 6. Rb5 Bh3 7. Kf3
Bc8 8. Bg1 Bh3 9. Ra5 Be6 10. Kf4 Kg6 11. Rb5 Kh7 12. Rb7 Bc4 13. Bd4 Kg8 14.
Kf5 Bd5 15. Ra7 Bc4 16. Bc5 Bd5

and then

6k1/R5p1/5p1p/2Bb1K2/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Cfish Tactical 2.0 250518 64 POPCNT NUMA:

At move 24 of this output- line you have already a won 7some position.

Without full Syzygys you'll have to have some more tries probably, but let's just see, maybe you'll get some mating score even without tbs sooner or later. The Lomonosov- position after 24.Kxh5 anyhow is #37 only:

6k1/R5p1/5p2/7K/8/B7/2b5/8 b - -

Kind regards,

P.S. I see you edited you posting in the meantime

PS: In the line I metioned 11. ..Kh7 is a blunder. 11. ..Kf7 holds the draw.

:)
Now I was able to see a rising score in the B3 line.
White puts the king on f4 and creates a zugzwang position. When black has to move pawns he is lost.
So I think Peter is right in
-- White has a forced win
-- There is no fortress

Whether this is a good test-position or not is another question.
Kind regards
Bernhard
