Mate in 11 Zugzwang Test Position

Post by Martin Hertz » Fri Oct 13, 2017 11:59 am

[d]8/8/8/1B6/6p1/8/4KPpp/3N2kr w - - 0 1
Stockfish 8 struggles heavily with this zugzwang position.

Results of some DOS engines at 3.3 GHz with depth and time announcing the mate in 11:

Code: Select all

M-Chess Pro 6 14 00:00:18

Chess Genius 3 16 00:00:20

M-Chess Pro 5 14 00:01:13

Socrates 3 19 00:21:20

Gideon Pro 1 21 00:33:03
These programs didn´t find the mate after around 1 hour in depth:

Code: Select all

Chess System Tal 25 --:--:--

Gandalf 3 21 --:--:--
Fritz 3 and Wchess cannot be tested, because they are buggy at this position, showing a wrong mate in 5.

The CT800 finds this in regular analysis:

Code: Select all

 11/11 0:00 0.00 1.Ke3 g3 2.fxg3 (1.389.599) 1890
 12/12 0:01 0.00 1.Ke3 g3 2.fxg3 (2.480.476) 1902
 13/13 0:02 0.00 1.Ke3 g3 2.fxg3 (4.174.325) 1930
 14/14 0:03 0.00 1.Ke3 g3 2.fxg3 (7.477.751) 1949
 15/15 0:07 0.00 1.Ke3 g3 2.fxg3 (13.870.628) 1960
 16/16 0:11 0.00 1.Ke3 g3 2.fxg3 (22.865.056) 1952
 17/17 0:19 0.00 1.Ke3 g3 2.fxg3 (37.359.212) 1921
 18/18 0:31 0.00 1.Ke3 g3 2.fxg3 (60.329.896) 1914
 19/21 1:26 +M11 1.Kd3 Kf1 2.Kd2+ Kg1 3.f4 g3 4.Bd7 Kf1 5.Bh3 Rg1 6.Bg4 Rh1 7.Be2+ Kg1 8.Nc3 Kf2 9.Ne4+ Kg1 10.Ng5 Kf2 11.Nh3+ (164.999.535) 1914
 20/21 2:23 +M11 1.Kd3 Kf1 2.Kd2+ Kg1 3.f4 g3 4.Bd7 Kf1 5.Bh3 Rg1 6.Bg4 Rh1 7.Be2+ Kg1 8.Nc3 Kf2 9.Ne4+ Kg1 10.Ng5 Kf2 11.Nh3+ (279.979.247) 1946
If black takes en passant after 3. f2-f4, there is a mate in 5:

Code: Select all

12/12 0:00 +M5 4.Nc3 Kf2 5.Ne4+ Kg1 6.Kc2 f2 7.Ng5 f1Q 8.Nh3+ (758.061) 1289
Interestingly, Shredder 13 erroneously reports a mate in 5 because it seems to disregard underpromotions in main search - the g pawn can promote to a knight in move 4, and then the mate doesn't work.

Code: Select all

 97/97 0:00 +M5 1.Nc3 g3 2.Ke3 gxf2 3.Ne2+ Kf1 4.Kd2 g1Q 5.Nf4+ (14.012.205) 21392
 98/98 0:00 +M5 1.Nc3 g3 2.Ke3 gxf2 3.Ne2+ Kf1 4.Kd2 g1Q 5.Nf4+ (14.355.687) 21458
 99/99 0:00 +M5 1.Nc3 g3 2.Ke3 gxf2 3.Ne2+ Kf1 4.Kd2 g1Q 5.Nf4+ (14.707.187) 21533
