There are minor patches between TCEC rounds, not leading up to it. And why would he tell you if he had shown all his cards?
First of all I didnt expect Houdart to tell me or anyone else I just hoped that he would :P
Secondly, where did Robert confirm that he will update Houdini between TCEC rounds ? Robert can surely patch H6 before TCEC starts or in between rounds if he wants to....
The Houdini release cycle has very little to do with TCEC.
TCEC is a fun tournament, but it's really not the most important thing in the world. I may or may not send in an improved version (no idea at this point in time) - it's frankly not all that important.

Correct, the very early Standard purchasers have received a version that was inadvertently too highly threaded. This has already been corrected in the current download packages. So you will lose this unexpected advantage with any future upgrade :).

In the Pro package, on other hand, we will continue to provide a Standard version that allows a high number of threads. This means that you can interchange Pro and Standard engines on high-end hardware when the needs arises, e.g. if you don't want the NUMA or Large Page stuff.

I did forget to ask you something Robert. I did buy the standard version. If I decided to upgrade to the pro version at some point, would I need to pay for the full version (60$) or the difference ?

Have you seen guys the individual statistics in Ingo's IPON match? pretty interesting:

Code: Select all

Head to head statistics:

1) Houdini 6 3354 : 3300 (+2206,=1026,-68), 82.4 %

    vs. : games ( +, =, -), (%) : Diff, SD, CFS (%)
    Komodo 11.2.2 : 220 ( 49, 149, 22), 56.1 : +39, 8, 100.0
    Stockfish 8 : 220 ( 39, 162, 19), 54.5 : +55, 7, 100.0

    Fizbo 1.9 : 220 ( 147, 65, 8), 81.6 : +285, 7, 100.0
    Ginkgo 2.0 : 220 ( 152, 66, 2), 84.1 : +293, 7, 100.0

    Booot 6.2 : 220 ( 165, 55, 0), 87.5 : +329, 7, 100.0

    Andscacs 0.90 : 220 ( 175, 44, 1), 89.5 : +333, 7, 100.0
    Equinox 3.30 : 220 ( 171, 49, 0), 88.9 : +349, 7, 100.0
    Chiron 4 : 220 ( 175, 45, 0), 89.8 : +360, 7, 100.0
    Critter 1.6a : 220 ( 175, 45, 0), 89.8 : +361, 7, 100.0
    Fritz 15 : 220 ( 176, 44, 0), 90.0 : +361, 7, 100.0
    Nirvanachess 2.4 : 220 ( 175, 44, 1), 89.5 : +388, 7, 100.0
    Hannibal 1.7 : 220 ( 161, 55, 4), 85.7 : +394, 7, 100.0

In fact, Houdini 6 is beating Stockfish 8 quite heavily, but it is obfuscated by high draw rate (73.6%), almost as heavily as it is beating Komodo 11.2.2. But Komodo is using the default settings with pretty high Contempt, so it is a bit underperforming against a stronger Houdini 6. Interesting results.

When the need arises, you can send us a mail and we'll direct you to an upgrade page on which you can pay the (€20 Euro + VAT) difference in price for the Pro version.

There are minor patches between TCEC rounds, not leading up to it. And why would he tell you if he had shown all his cards?

I think that a victory at TCEC would be important for Houdini, at least for users who know well what chess engines are about. And even for marketing purposes, nowadays TCEC results are as publicized as the crappy WCCC (TCEC would deserve even more). I don't know why you are not very interested in TCEC.

I am very interested in TCEC, but it's not a deciding factor in the release cycle of Houdini.
Sending in versions at each Stage that are marginally better than the previous one, is not hugely relevant. For me it's definitely at least as interesting to see how the publicly released version is doing.

It is 99.95% certain that current Houdini qualifes from early stages. Perhaps only at later stages engine update may be considered?

A win for Houdini in the super final would get a lot of attention and drive sales. He is still in business whatever the result but a win would boost Houdini in a lot of ways.
