Arena - how to have it use all cores ?

Post by Lion »

Hello,

I just installed Arena and wanted to test Stockfish.
It however doesn't seem to use more than half of a core.

How to I have it use all cores of my computer?

Thanks for your help.

I'm not quite sure how an engine would use only half of a core, but here is one way to make sure your engine is using n cores (where you chose what n is):

Engines -> Load Engine

Then select Stockfish from the list of engines you have already added to Arena.

Stockfish should now be loaded and a window in the interface should show Stockfish. Ctrl-1 should bring up a "Configuration" window with the UCI parameters for Stockfish available to be changed to your liking.

Change "Threads" to be the number of cores you want Stockfish to use. You should not try to set this value higher than the number of cores your computer has or performance will suffer greatly.

Click OK and then use Stockfish (either play a game against it, start a tournament for engines to play in, or use infinite Analysis) and it should be using more than 1 core.

Thanks for your response.
When I go to the engine configuration (ctrl-1) there is no field/options for changing the Threads ??

Really strange....

in arena, the number of cores are set up separately:

Press "F11" key, goto "UCI" Tab and you can find the number of cores to use at the bottom

I've not seen that before.

If you right click the mouse while the cursor is inside the Stockfish analysis output window, that is another way to bring up the configuration window.

You might try that.

Changing options in this tab will affect ALL uci-engines.
This is kind of dangerous, but can be quite helpful if you are aware of it.

Thanks
I was able to fix that with the "F11" and following your instructions!

Thanks again and to all who helped and provided feedback!
