Post by Rodolfo Leoni »

I'm playing rwo tournaments, 10 games total. This is a game I played with the only help of Cerebellum book and Daniel's SF version with "Never clear hash" and Savehash options.

Black error was 41. ..Qe8 (41. ..Rc5 leads to draw). That's the position after 41. ..Qe8.

A lot of fails high/low and almost 1 hour to get an interesting score, but with the possibility of some misevaluations, as sometimes happens. I'd invite Peter or someone else with powerful hardware to check the position.

Anyway, I spent about 40 mins of analysys and score minmax to get this result, in 0 seconds.

And If you want to see a score beyond +400 cps, I'll post the analysis after 42.Qd4 Qe5.

If someone is interested to know how I got it, and wants try to use PHs with that position, I'll describe what I did.

Well, I feel a bit sleepy (midnight here) but I'll try to write something which makes some senses. I hope you'll forgive me if I'm not precise with something. On request, I'll clear everything... tomorrow! :)

Before starting playing the tournament, I prepared a 2 GB size hash for each opponent. So, there was a "Bordenave.hsh" hash file ready for use. I used Cerebellum book and it seems it was deeper than opponent book. He played book moves, but he needed much more time at book line end.

One must remember to ckeck the "never clear hash" UCI option on.

Since we got out of book, I loaded "his" hash file after receving his moves. I made the engine analyze in infinite mode and I made moves of his PV on the board, usually 8-10 plies. Then, I took them back, observing if the minmax process caused the engine to select a different variation. In that case, I made that move and I followed the new PV for some plies. Going forward-backward with many variations, I made the engine run a tree. So the engine keps all the scores and propagated them to the root.

In the case of that position, I actually explored 20-25 plies deep variations to be absolutely sure of the game result.

Example, the position above, after 41. ..Qe8 (??). I made on the board:

42.Qd4 Qe5 43.a3 Kf8 44.b4 Ke8 45.Qxe5+ Rxe5 46.Rd3 etc etc until 25-30 plies, until I got a +400 cps. Then take back some plies until engine finds a new defense and explore it until score is +400 cps, and so on. After about 20 mins, it happened all variations after 42.Qd4 Qe5 43.a3 Kf8 gave +400 cps, so I tried with 43. ..Qxd4, exploring all possible defenses. I eventually got, after 42.Qd4 Qe5, the following output:

If someone is interested to know how I got it, and wants try to use PHs with that position, I'll describe what I did.
Yes please and thank you .. :D

Unfortunately, loading the hash-file does not work. Although I can store and I get e.g. a 2 GB hash file. I also see disk accesses in the TaskManager during saving, but nothing is loaded
I have downed the program (Fritz 15, ChessBase! 4, Aquarium 2017). Restarted and went to the postion. (Before 41. Qe8); after 39 HZ the engine offered Tc5). I go to parameters in the engine-Menue and cklicked "loadhashfromfile". But it does not load anything. And the pull depth is increased as slowly as without PH.

My Question: how or with which GUI do I reach the output, which can be seen in the post?

I just received a PM about a difficulty to load the hash data previously saved. I think it's good to post about how I load a saved file, so others can check if it works.

First, I use Arena. I guess there's no difference with other GUIs, tough.

After setting the hash size the same as saved file, and before trying to load them, I let the engine start an infinite analysis on a position, just few seconds, to let the hash reach the right size. Then, I stop analysis and I load the hash file. In my PC to load a 2 GBs hash file takes 5-10 minutes. It depends if other processes are running, IMO.

You can be sure hashes are really loading because you see an intense disk access. You must do nothing untill disk access stops. Then, hashes have been loaded.

I hope this helps. :)

trying Arena - I doesn't finde the settings for the hashSize. It produces an 4GB hashfile automatically.

Check menu Engines-Manage, then UCI window. You probably have the common UCI setting to 4 GBs.

I'm getting a bit tired of being the only one running tests on this hash system. I'll wait to see someone's else effort to contribute before continuing.
