Scid vs. PC 4.18 x64 (Windows 7 SP1)

Post by Norbert Raimund Leisner »

Hello,

I wanted to install the current application https://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvs ... ows-64bit/
into the folder:
C:/Programme/Scid vs PC-4.18/ but this approach failed, although a desktop icon is visible on the screen.

After a double mouse-click on the symbol an error indication occurs:

can´t create directory:"C/Programme/Scid vs PC-4.18/bin/data/Inbox":
permission denied
while executing
"file mkdir $Inbox"
(procedure:":: CorrespondenceChess::checkIn Outbox line 112)
invoked from within
"::CorrespondenceChess:checkInOutbox"
(in namespace eval:"::CorrespondenceChess" script line 2606)
invoked from within
"namespace eval CorrespondenceChess {
# whether the console is already open or not
set isOpen 0
# default Database
set CorrBase [file na..."
(file "C:\Programme\Scid vs PC -4.18\bin\scid.gui" line 139714)

very strange: an simple installation into the directory C:\Scid vs PC-4.18 is successful without any problems.

*It seems that Scid vs PC 4.18 x64 accepts (only?!) the default installation path

Perhaps can other users try out the (counterpart) win32 edition too:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvs ... s/windows/ and tell me your experiences with such problems....

* Chess Academy 5.5 SE with Goliath Blitz (a commercial product over 15 years ago) http://www.stmintz.com/ccc/index.php?id=196108 runs on Windows 7 SP1 32-bit stable only with a specified installation directory - otherwise the GUI crashes / cannot be launched correctly

Best wishes,
Norbert

Maybe it is some windows brain dead about "Programme"
But i also see some issues , possibly with your error report.
"C:/Programme/Scid vs PC-4.18/" is using unix directory terminators "/"
try using the windows "\"

Also, your report has an errant space here
(file "C:\Programme\Scid vs PC -4.18\bin\scid.gui" line 139714)
Is this significant, or just a typo of your message.
Sorry, but i don't have too much time/inclination to debug windows installation issues. :(

file "C:\Programme\Scid vs PC -4.18\bin\scid.gui" line 139714) is in my opinion significant, it does not matter whether a symbol "/" or "\" is between
the folders Programme and Scid vc PC- 4.18

I tried out several combinations

C:\Programme\Scid vs PC-4.18
C:/Programme/Scid vs PC-4.18
C:\Programme/Scid vs PC-4.18
C:/Programme\Scid vs PC-4.18

a commandline like C:\WinBoard-Engines\Scidlet\Scid vs PC\v4.18
works successfully (including a desktop icon).....

What happens if you replace 'Programme' by Program Files' for the inst. path?
Edit: Of course I assume you tried to install as admin?

'permission denied' as error message suggests that the path name is correctly understood (or it would have said 'file or directory not found'), but that the directory in question is write protected.

I agree with the post just before this post of mine. I have downloaded the
32-bit version and it is impossible to install the package using a standard
account. You require root or admin account to install this package. So I
guess you tried to install this using your admin credentials and then tried
to run or install a feature using a standard user account. I guess the
solution is to right-click the scid-vs-pc folder and provide full access to other user
accounts, not just admin. This would solve it.

Your Windows OS is correct and just protecting you, because you cannot access or create a new folder on those stuff owned by the admin if you're running a standard account. ; )

Yes - there are a few problems we have here.
1. The windows version does not make use of a $HOME/.scidvspc directory (or something simliar). We have never had a windows-centric developer who is willing to do the coding and extensive testing.
2. The project is quite on the bloated side (in a good way :) ) Even the linux/mac versions have many occasions to install things outside of $HOME/.scidvspc. For example, the spelling files, engines, and opening books. These things come with Scid, but can also be upgraded/added to by the user.
3. And any changes touch or break multiple other features, some of which are hardly ever used.

So it is a serious effort to fix the windows permission issues properly.
I'm not even sure about windows file permissions. Norbett reports installation into the directory C:\Scid vs PC-4.18 works... but not "C:\Programme\Scid vs PC -4.18\" !? Sorry, but i don't have much love for MS to put it mildly.

Is C:\Programme the German equivalent to "C:\Program Files"? Then I would understand why it doesn't work, you need admin permission to create files there.

Unpacking all files associated with a program in one directory used to be the traditional Windows method of installing. But recent Windows versions have become "multi-user aware", so that this no longer is an obvious solution. It has become much more Linux-like in that respect. Executables and read-only data shared by all users should go into the "C:\Program Files" tree (requiring admin rights to install), like executables go in /usr/local/bin, and data in /usr/local/share in Linux. But user-specific data should be located in the C:\Users\<username>\Documents\... tree, (or C:\Users\<username\AppData when it should not be visible to the user) like it goes in $HOME/... in Linux.

So it should not be too difficult to remap the Linux system directories to the equivalent Windows folders. It is just a matter of using symbolic name in the pathnames, (like '~' for the user's login directory), and making sure they are expanded in the proper way on the various platforms.
