Need material for a speech

Post by Kempelen »

Hello,

I am going to make a speech at my club about curiosities of computer chess and about making the people to know the pros and cons of analizing with an engine. I need material for the speech. Would anyone here like to share with me :

- Positions where engine does not evaluate correctly the position
- Fortress
- Sac that are incorrect acording to engine, but could be a very practical choice in OTB human games
- or any position that serves to a teaching porpose for the speech.

Thank you very much in advance.

There should be quite some games by Tal as he was known for exactly that style of play.

Probably the most famous game of 2016 was Caruana vs Nakamura, where we see a queen sacrifice that Caruana had prepared and Nakamura had missed in preparation because of incorrect computer analysis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ8Qe5O7Qcw

A quote from Caruana:
It is possible to overlook if you’re not going deeply into the position and you’re more or less making the computer’s first line. I think if he played this over the board as White he’d play Nf5 very quickly. I think this is just over-reliance on the computer.

Some positions badly evaluated by SF :
8/8/5k2/8/2B4p/5RbP/5pP1/7K b - -; c0 "eval = draw"
8/8/8/5Bp1/7k/8/4pPKP/8 w - - bm Bg4; eval = draw;
2k5/2p5/1q1p4/pPpPp1pp/N1P1Pp2/P4PbP/KQ4P1/8 w - - am Nxb6+?
r1b1k3/1p1p1pp1/1p1P3p/pP6/P7/8/5PPP/4R1K1 b q -; c0 "eval +/-";
Draw by fortress : 2b1r3/r2ppN2/8/1p1p1k2/pP1P4/2P3R1/PP3PP1/2K5 w - - bm Nd6;
Draw by fortress : 2k5/8/1p1p4/pPpPp2p/2P1Pp2/P4PbP/K2Q4/8 b - - bm h4;
Bf4 wins, SF sees equality : 2r5/prkpR1p1/2p1ppK1/P1p1N1B1/P1P1P3/8/8/8 w - - bm Bf4;
Draw by fortress : 3B4/1r2p3/r2p1p2/bkp1P1p1/1p1P1PPp/p1P1K2P/PPB5/8 w - - bm Ba4+;
Gives a piece to draw, hard for SF : 3k4/4pp2/n2n4/5BN1/3N4/b7/4K3/8 w - - bm Nxf7+; c1 "diff=8";
Long term pins are hard to understand for engines : 5rk1/pp3p1p/7b/2pR4/8/2P4P/P1PNr1P1/2K4R b - - bm Rxd2;
Another long term threat : 6R1/8/2pB3k/2P4p/5p1q/5P2/4P1K1/8 w - - bm Bf8+;
Black rooks mobility become very bad after Bf5+!! (SF finds this one sometimes) : 8/1p2K2k/8/2p3rr/8/PPR4B/2P3P1/8 w - - bm Bf5+;
Long mate threat : 8/2N4r/1p3pkp/8/5K1p/2P4N/P3Bn2/8 w - - id ?; bm Bh5;
Null-move at its worse for SF, Nab3+ is an easy win ! : 8/6pp/1K6/N5P1/3N4/8/npn1P3/k7 w - - bm Nab3+; c0 "Lommer 1963"; fmvn 1; hmvc 0; id "Nightmare Nr.020";

Score around +8.5 in a lost position. :lol:
I originally posted this position, because I think it is a very good illustration that even top engines are not perfect, and that deep analysis is no substitute for actually playing out the position.

It gave rise to discussion that hijacked the thread, however. So I now moved that discussion to a separate thread about Queens vs Knights.

I won't tolerate any further discussion on this position in this thread.
