We'll see how it goes--I've got my fingers crossed.

I hope you're right Steve. This Thursday should be interesting. Everyone I know is very excited, but of course the proof is in the pudding. Or in this case the benchmarks, which come out from under their NDAs this Thursday.

I don't think you can use multi-core benchmarks to deduce single core performance. Based on other single core benchmarks (https://goo.gl/dpNEcm) I'm reasonably confident (i.e. hoping) Ryzen will match Intel's best when it comes to single core speed.

Only time will confirm or shatter my hopes,

Steve
Steve,

I hope you're right. I would like to see a strong AMD.

Going cheapo, the probably 19,000 on Fritz, stock Ryzen 1700 is much better than my stock 14,000 on Fritz core i7 4790 (4 cores) at the same price. Per core, performance is a bit worse for Ryzen, but overall significantly better for the same price, and I like many cores and threads for my purposes.
Taking into account the cost of the processor you (and Steve) are right, of course. For testing purpose it is better to have more cores - know that, I like more cores :) But, your core searches 3500 NPS, while Ryzen only 2300. 50% slower, that is more than a bit worse. From a pure engineering point of view, compared to the Intel core, this is an unimpressive performance from Ryzen.

I sincerely hope that the news is fake.
If apples to apples (same number of cores/threads), one can compare cheapo basic 8 core Ryzen 1700 Fritz bench of probably close to 19,000 at $330 with expensive (above $1000) 8 core i7 6900K having Fritz bench of 22,500. Not that far, less than 20% difference. Per core performance is not very easy to gauge, as Fritz benchmark is not scaling very well for 16 threaded CPUs. If these Ryzen results are confirmed, in the following months I will probably go for a cheapo Ryzen.

Hi Graham,

Yeah, it's what I've been up to the last few years. Long hours and lots of spice simulations. I'm glad to see the forum is still going strong, although I was sad to read of the passing of a few of the members.

I was hoping you would be more confident as opposed to a finger crossing for luck.

Why?
If you can have 4 Opterons (4 x 16 cores)
You can also have 4 Naples ( 4 x 32 cores)

Opteron benchmarks are terrible. Ryzens architecture is far superior. Its not just raw number of cores that we are after.

If I wax enthusiastically and make grand claims then I'm going to be accused of being an AMD shill.
There should be tons of benchmarks tomorrow, so let's just wait and see. Regardless, this is the best
processor AMD has ever put out, IMHO.
