Perhaps the Windows version does not make such an assumption, as I did a grep and failed to find any such references.

Actually the script that uses cutechess-cli for CLOP is in the cutechess distribution. See: ...

But I think the Texel method is better founded.

For things not tunable by that method I have sometimes used an algorithm called Stochastic RBF.
