Man verses machine

Post by Dann Corbit »

People can easily see that Bxg4 is best. How long until your computer sees it?

[d]r1bq1rk1/ppp1n1b1/3p2pp/3Ppp2/2P1P1n1/2N5/PP1NBPPP/R1BQ1RK1 w - -

They can find it:
r1bq1rk1/ppp1n1b1/3p2pp/3Ppp2/2P1P1n1/2N5/PP1NBPPP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - acd 37; acs 21720; bm Bxg4; cce 128; ce 64; pm Bxg4 {38} exf5 {7} b4 {1}; pv Bxg4 fxg4 b4 a5 bxa5 Rxa5 Nb3 Ra8 c5 b6 cxb6 cxb6 a4 Ba6 Nb5 h5 Be3 Kh7 Nd2 Bh6 Bxh6 Kxh6 Qb3 Kg7 f3 Qd7 fxg4 Bxb5 Qxb5 Qxb5 axb5 Rxf1+ Rxf1 Rc8 gxh5 gxh5 Nf3 Kh6 Kf2 Rc5 Kg3 Rxb5; white_wins 24; black_wins 11; draws 10;

That was on a fairly slow machine, hence the very long think time.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Latest SF picks Bxg4 at d=30 but doesn't settle on it until a considerable while later (after going through 34 billion nodes). Follows your PV for 23 plies at d=39, too.

Hi Dann,

Although this analysis took some time do you think this may be a good position to try this on??? You know what I mean, just a thought.

Just got home from work <S>

If anyone can try running these 4 positions under same conditions I would be very interested in its output of the analyses.

This seems to me like one and the same position.

No matter what machines say, in all of the above positions the side not to move has some 50cps advantage, so a single inaccuracy by the side to move should lead to its loss.

Current top engines are mainly for the evaluation of simple endgames, and not for complex middlegame positions.

Hi Dann,

Just got in and saw your analyses of the 4 positions, any chance you have the full output or atleast the amount of time spent to find the move?

Thx

For Komodo 9.3, Bxg4 not so high even at virtual D=38 (manual 9 plies + D=29).
At D=31 (9 + 22) eval is only +0.26, easily pruned

Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

They are the same position. Yet some engines will solve all, some will solve only one, and some will solve none given an hour to think.

If you analyze deeply, you will see that the side to move has a large advantage, and that this is also born out in the statistics for high end games where the key move was played.
