Komodo 8 for Android is $3.97, not free but quite affordable.

See here ---->> https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ess.komodo

Komodo 8 for PC is now a free download from the Komodo site.

Edit: There is an Android compile in the Komodo 8 free download, but I had trouble getting it to work. The paid version, however, works great so that's what I recommend.

If you download Komodo8 in zip format from their site, you can exract a binary that you can install via CfA. It seems to work without licence check. I see "licenced to Komodochess" once imported. So i see that it's free for Android too.
But... One bad news: this is the bundled version. Not the same as the version sold at GooglePlay.
It's weaker than purchased version by default: less nodes per second!

No matter what, it's a beautiful gift by Komodo team.

Yes, Komodo 8 is free. Note the android file included in the download no longer works on more recent versions of Android since the memory models have changed.

There is a readme file included in the download. Look there for help. If the readme and sethash files included with Komodo are not enough, you can contact me at the email address on the komodochess.com website.

Note that Komodo 8 is free, but you many not put copies on other web sites or file sites. The idea of a free program is to entice people to visit our site and maybe generate some future sales. Plus I do not want nefarious people adding viruses to it and distributing it elsewhere (which people have done under other names).

Some more explanation: The free K8 build is arm5, not arm7. That's the reason it will run slower than GooglePlay version. But the reason it won't work on Lollipop and Marshmallow devices is probably the PIE (Positiın Independent Executables) status of the build. Android 5.X and beyond require PIE with dynamic code. If not specified, the Android OS will keep the build from running. PIE or noPIE builds doesn't matter for devices up to KitKat, as far as i've tested.

That's correct. The Android version of K8 which was shipped with the desktop version will only work on 32-bit ARM devices running KitKat. The version in the Play Store is available for all available platforms (incl. 64-bit) and runs on modern versions of Android (and contains bugfixes which weren't available at the time of the original release). Because of the multiple binary & maintenance issues, and because the Play Store price is fairly low, we removed the Android version from the K9 (and K10) desktop releases.

This free K8 android version runs 15 times slower than stockfish.

This is very, very slow.

It´s not a great gift.
