3rd place, Stage 2; 4th place Stage 3. More than enough for anything but the final.

I agree. As far as I know other than the two chess gods only Gull 3 can put up a fight against H4. TCEC Season 9 will have the top 8 from two groups move on to stage 2, and the top 8 from stage 2 will move on to stage 3 (candidates). It's a safe bet Houdini will make it to stage 3.

This is a big surprise, and a good thing for the chess engine world.

At the same time, I'm noticing that Fritz 15 is not listed among the participants.

Actually if Robert is planning on release H5 at the end of the year it would be very likely that what we'd see in TCEC9 is a Houdini dev of H5. He'd probably want to keep working on it even after TCEC9 until it's ready.
