Hello,

is Fritz 15 able to solve the problems which are mentioned on
http://www.herderschach.de/Training/Onl ... tr012.html
(chapter "Unterverwandlungen")?

Just click on the blue printed links and a chess diagram (by ChessBase 8) with the critical position is shown.

Best wishes,
Norbert

As far as my (rudimentary) German allows me to see, that Unterverwandlungen section deals with four examples of underpromotion. I don't know whether these examples are outdated or simply not well chosen (none of them gives a mate count) but Fritz 15 resolves ##1, 2 and 4 to mate in mere seconds on a 3 GHz (overclocked to 3.6) Core 2 Duo box from 2008 - all without underpromotions or tablebases:

Cornitz – Neumann
Berlin, 1863

[D] 8/8/8/8/k7/ppp1N3/8/1K6 b - - 0 1

The analysis page gives five moves of fancy footwork and concludes with "and Black wins easily" (und Schwarz gewinnt leicht.), which is kind of hilarious considering the root position is a tablebase mate in six. Fritz 15 32-bit finds it instantly (with tablebases off, as WinXP chokes on them):

Code: Select all

1...a2+ 2.Ka1 Kb4 3.Nc2+ bxc2 4.Kxa2 Kc4 5.Ka1 c1Q+ 6.Ka2 Qb2#
  -+ (-#6) Depth: 7 00:00:00 5kN

Beni – Littlewood
Luzern, 1963

[D] k6r/2R5/PP6/K7/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

According to the analysis on the herderschach page, the key to the win is an underpromotion to a bishop. F15 gets by without it since it's a tablebase mate in seven, which F15 finds in five seconds with TB off:

This position took the longest to resolve since it's the only one that is not a TB mate. The mate in 8 given below has been verified separately on a 64x 12-core Xeon box with 3+4+5 Nalimov TB by letting analysis run to d=40 (the mate was actually found at d=33 after 10 seconds, but I wanted to see if there was a quicker mate)

A TB mate in 15. Of the four this is the only good example of underpromotion, although rather trivial even for 32-bit F15 running on seven-year-old hardware:

I'd say that if you want to test F15 you'll need to come up with more challenging positions. ;)

IMHO you omitted the last position. Why?
[D]1r5K/6PP/8/8/8/1k4q1/6P1/8 w - - 0 1
Can Fritz15/Rybka/Junior solve it?
Kind regards

I didn't recognize "Selbstpatt durch Unterverwandlung" as a link to a position (the other four links were in the internationally-recognizable "player 1 - player 2, location, date" format).

I don't have Junior. As expected, with and without tablebases F15 fails to see the 1.g8=B! draw and reports that Black mates in 15 instead.

But that's nothing to worry about, of course. All Vas and Chessbase have to do is release an elephant dart gun plugin for F15 later on.

Or CB could fix F15's B problem, but introduce a Q-side castling problem. :D

I strongly disagree.
The way to go is
no bishobpromotion gives at least 20 elo
no knightpromotion gives at least 50 elo
no rookpromotion gives at least 10 elo
no queenpromotion gives at least 100 elo
summs up to at least 180 elo
Kind regards

PS: [D]1r5K/6PP/8/8/8/1k4q1/6P1/8 w - - 0 1
the obove position is a full point solution.
g8B wins every other move loses.
