Question about 2 variables in the pgn output file for TCEC

I hope someone can help answer this. I have noticed there are 2 variables that appear in TCEC pgn games that I dont think I understand there function. It seems that either ev= or wv= can be used either by themselves or together in reporting the evaluation. Here is a sampl output file that confuses me. Notice that the evals sign doesnt change from white or black. One would think that if black is showing a -5 then white should show a positive value. And in a few cases Ihave seen both ev= and wv= appear within the same move. Here is one of those pgn files.

I have posted this type of question in the TCEC forum but no one seems to know much about the usage of ev= or wv=??

ps maybe there is a document somewhere that explains there usage but I have not found one.

So these seem to be:

ev is the evaluation (positive for white)
mt must be move time in hours, minutes and seconds
tl must be the remaining time on that clock for that side
s is nodes per second (maybe means speed?)
N is total nodes searched
pv is the Principal Variation the engine found
tb is the number of Tablebase Hits
R50 is the 50 move clock (counts from 50 to 0 and at 0 its a draw)

Hi,

I know there is no wv= in this particular file but the ev= are present. I thought there was no reason to include the other file once someone can offer me an explanation for the file I did include. What are your thoughts about the sign not changing with the ev? Look at around move 200 for the sign not changing since the evals are high there.

Hi Mark,

I am aware of the purposes of the other variables but am only interested in what the ev= and wv= in the file. I realize the wv is not included in this file but the ev= is. How do you explain why the sign is the same whether its black or white to move? Look at move 200 and after, the sign never changes?? How can you assume that the move is positive for white?

Always printing scores from white's point of view is common.

The output score sign from engines may differ from the output sign of a gui. Most gui's use the so called WPOV (WPOV = white's point of view) which means if it is positive, it is better for white, and if it is negative it is better for black.
For engines using uci protocol, the engine should report the score from EPOV (EPOV = engine's point of view) also called SPOV (side's point of view). What if in a given position white consider it as bad for him and shows say -0.25, while black agrees that black is better and shows say +0.35. The gui then display this as

The user can interpret it as that position is better for black because the sign are both negative and the gui is using WPOV.

For a gui programmer using WPOV for example and assuming engines are using EPOV,

From your posted pgn, the gui there is using WPOV because the score signs are negative close to end of the game and black won.
