I never got my activation key so I can't use Fritz 15 engine but I can use the GUI. I tried a friend mode game, at default it has me at 1300 club player but maybe that's because that's what I chose when I first installed Fritz 15.

Throughout the game it talked a lot but it doesn't feel like playing a person. Even when I was in a completely winning position it was very optimistic and I didn't sense any fear in its voice.

Here's the game, i'm white using Stockfish November 16 2015 on another computer. I used up about 3x more time although that wasn't needed:

Please excuse the endgame, I was using infinite analysis and pressing space bar to make the engine move but I don't understand how the syzygy thing works, it kept making illogical moves. The final moves I had to do them myself.

When I won it didn't say anything and didn't congratulate me, just took me back to the Fritz 15 GUI. After clicking Friend Mode, it now says games = 1 and score = 100% and my rating is 1330.

I will try playing another game to see if it adapts.

Here's the second game, this time it made me play black. This time to make it easier on myself I just set my assistant to 1 minute blitz. Here's the second game:

[Event "Friend mode"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "2015.11.21"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Friendly Game"]
[Black "Atreides, Leto"]
[Result "0-1"]
[ECO "E08"]
[BlackElo "1330"]
[PlyCount "68"]

1. d4 {1} Nf6 {15} 2. Nf3 {1} e6 {24} 3. c4 {5} d5 {5} 4. g3 {3} Be7 {7} 5. Bg2
{2} O-O {5} 6. O-O {2} Nbd7 {5} 7. Qc2 {3} h6 {5} 8. cxd5 {1} exd5 {5} 9. Bf4 {
2} c6 {5} 10. Na3 {2} Ne4 {7} 11. Nd2 {2} Ng5 {5} 12. Bxg5 {2} hxg5 {7} 13. e3
{2} Nf6 {7} 14. Rad1 {2} Bg4 {8} 15. f3 {2} Bh5 {8} 16. Bh3 {2} g4 {7} 17. fxg4
{2} Nxg4 {5} 18. e4 {2} Ne3 $1 {5} 19. Qb3 {1} Nxd1 {6} 20. Rxd1 {1} Bxd1 {6}
21. Qxd1 {1} Bxa3 {5} 22. bxa3 {1} dxe4 {6} 23. Nxe4 {1} Re8 {4} 24. Qd3 {1}
Qe7 {6} 25. Bf5 {1} g6 {5} 26. Nc5 {2} gxf5 {5} 27. Qxf5 {1} Qe1+ {5} 28. Qf1 {
1} Qd2 {5} 29. Qf2 {2} Re1+ {5} 30. Qxe1 {4} Qxe1+ {5} 31. Kg2 {1} Qe2+ {7} 32.
Kh3 {3} Kg7 {5} 33. Kh4 {2} Kg6 {4} 34. Nd3 {2} Rh8# {5} 0-1

It now says my rating is 1360. By the way there's also a graph I thought at first it was just a rating graph but now I see that it graphs your opening and middlegame. I don't understand it at the moment but here's a picture of it:

Can you describe the database functions? The description made it sound likey they've added features there, turning Fritz into something like a mini-Chessbase.

Yep.

A simple copyright notice would fix this.

The Stockfish chess engine and its components although distributed as freeware in no way might become subject to any form of commerce.

That would be against the GPL.

ChessBase is free to sell SF provided they comply with the terms of the GPL.

That is both sleazy and legally wrong. Trademark infringement and misleading advertising/misrepresentation or whatever it is called.

Selling Stockfish for the price of a commercial engine without warning the customer that he can download it for free... Maybe a bit sleazy, but it would not bother me. In the end, nobody expects a regular shop owner to inform his customers that an article he sells can be bought for half the price at the shop next door.

Indeed!

:-)

However, when said shop owner repackages and re-brands free software and sells it as a version of a well known product to unsuspecting buyers, I am sure that you can practically spoon the sleaze off that arrangement.

Of course someone will now inform me of my naiveté and ask where have I been the last ....... years.

As long as the buyer is happy I suppose; caveat emptor and all that...

Later.

In the hypothetical SF - Chessbase scenario, Chessbase would be providing a lot of added value over and above the engine itself - their well regarded GUI, learning and training functions etc, playchess, and the list goes on. As an integrated package, it would not be sleazy or wrong, in my view.

In my opinion, it would be wrong, but I doubt they'd ever resort to such an idea anyway.
