Hi Ed,
very nice! I have had contact with Marty Hirsch to get a free MChess version for you list. But he wrote me, he has no version without copy protection:
Unfortunately, due to changes in technology I cannot create a non-protected version of MChess.
This is really a pity! Perhapy someone can help him

I like the story behind in Rebel 6.0, but was not actually pleasant with you at that time. Year 1994, just graduated from college, and knew nothing about computer chess. Encountered internet around 1996 with a very expensive hourly rate.

My sample game, tried to hunt its king but could not, very tactical play from Rebel 6.0.

Many thanks, Ed. It's a great idea.

But i have a question: Is the performance of dosbox good? I just gave it a try (under linux, using wine to run dosbox, what may give a bad performance, maybe) and saw that the depths reached by the engines are faaar from what I remember from the old days. Is this to be expected? What is your experience? (from quite some years ago I remember that dosemu gave me a much better performance, but was also more difficult to configure. The package you provide may also be used under such an environment, just a thought.)
Thanks again

In this pack, the speed is not set to "max" for the programs, you've to set yourself. I did here, it's 10 times faster.
One more thing : there's probably native dos emulators for Linux. See here : http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/DOSBoxFrontends

Thank you, I'll try.
Did you make the changes in the dosbox configuration file?

Recently someone (forgot his name!) cracked the copy protection of Rebel 8 since I couldn't compile it any longer. I think he can! And it would be great to have the old Mchess.

Performance under DosBox is bad indeed but, well, you don't load them for strength reasons, at least not me. A solution is Windows Virtual PC, it's free and DOS programs will run at full speed provided you can install (have a legal copy of) Windows 98.

I use "D-fend Reloaded" to configure DosBox. I simply set the CPU cycles to "Max".

Thank you for this gift. Why aren't there any Rebel versions though? They were my favorites.

They are planned later, all of them.
