Any engine?

Post by Dhanish »

Is there any engine which plays 19. Nd2 in this position:
[D]r4bnr/p4pp1/Qpk1p2p/3pP3/2pP4/3b1N2/P4PPP/2BR2K1 w - - 0 19
It occurred in a correspondence game of mine, I don't know how my opponent found it.

How sure are you Nd2 is the best move?

Anyway, to answer your question, Rybka 4.1 gets Nd2 in a couple of seconds on my machine and it seems to stick with it.

Seems like a good test position. Stockfish hasn't found Nd2:

but sees it is good if asked to search just that move:

Most of my engines and I have them all like 19)a4. Several liked the move 19)Ne1

weird. I have an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz and it likes the 19)a4 move running on 4 cores.

Not sure, but I had to struggle hard for the draw.

Yes, Rybka 4.1 seems to like Nd2 for depths at least upto 26, but thinks it is 0.00! After 19. Nd2 Kc7 20. Nb3 Ne7, White seems to be winning! For details, please see my annotation at: http://pbdhanish.blogspot.in/2014/04/70 ... ss-in.html.

I t seems that 19... Kc7 20. Nb3 Ne7 and 19... Ne7 20. Nb3 Kc7 mostly transpose, but maybe playing Bb4 helps a bit for Black as in your main line. My Stockfish version also can't find Nd2 but if you play it, eventually sees Nd2-Nb3-Nc5!

After 19. Nd2 Stockfish usually around depth 40 sees something:

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Rd2 is suggested by some engines (engine: Fischerle 0.9.50 64 Bit), and, in fact, doesn't look too bad:
