What we are witnessing here could very well be the beginning of the usual trend. Initially people did not know what TCEC was, so they did not care whether they were participating or not. After all, it was no trouble to them. But now they start to discover that it is taken serious by the general public, to the point where it would be considered an unofficial World Championship by many. So it cannot be ignored, and will have a huge impact. Which need not always be a sales-boosting impact for every participant. So that there could be good commercial reasons not to participate. "Hey, people consider this a World Championship. Then I'd better not participate...".

It isn't a coincidence that so few programmers are interested to participate in the WCCC. Most Chess programmers simply don't want a World Championship.

Bummer. Among the old guard commercials, it was the one who displayed the most interesting game, and the most competitive one in the last two seasons. That is, it was the harder bone to chew for the big three. I really do not understand this decision.

The only thing they communicate on is the fact that

Not a single word about TCEC, either to say why HIARCS withdraws from this one or to talk about how it fared in the previous one.

Anyone with a half-brain knows that this World Championship from ICGA is a joke. But if we consider the public at large, those who know that fact, are a relatively tiny minority. The majority is ignorant and gullible. They look at this propaganda website and really believe that Hiarcs is the strongest engine in the world.

It's marketing: to sell HIARCS they need to keep people ignorant about the fact that, for example, Stockfish is free software and open source, and demolishes HIARCS by hundreds of ELO. Also they do not want people to discover Houdini or Komodo either.

What they least want is to publicize the fact that there is a REAL world chess competition called TCEC, and that HIARCS doesn't stand a monkey's chance to win it.

Ouch, sorry to hear that, it is really disappointing, as Hiarcs has an interesting style of play.

At the same time, please pardon my ignorance, but do you actually need the programmer's permission to have an engine participate in your competition? On what basis?

I think WCCC is interesting to most programmers. It is just not convenient. TCEC does not exist in the minds of most people. Making some small number of people who follow the hobby closely happy could spark a few sales but it is not likely worth the effort if you already have a strong customer base and have other things to do.

Hiarcs is a very fine engine, despite not being amongst the top few in the field.

I would not be surprised to see classic engines come out in two versions in the future. In their original form for unique play and an engine tournament version which includes Rybka/IPPOLIT additions made to it.

The classic will still be used for the purest/chess lover and the modified one that does better in engine tournaments for everyone else

Sorry but I don't understand your post.

Do you think that Komodo, Stockfish, etc are not original?
From your post, it seems that each engine stronger than Hiarcs can't be original. Are you serious? And by the way, from what I've read, in Ippolit/Rybka there was nothing revolutionary.

Besides, who has set Hiarcs as a benchmark for originality? Have you ever seen its sources in +20 years? Age doesn't matter: even Pandix is a very old engine, 20+ as well, and we all knows DF14's similarity results.

Maybe Hiarcs has reached some kind of limit or maybe next version will be 200 points stronger, who knows, but this doesn't mean that from now on every engine stronger than Hiarcs must be considered not original only because its programmer can't improve it.

If HIARCS is not playing it's not because of Ippo engines (they played in previous TCEC editions as well), it's because TCEC is gaining more and more popularity worldwide, it's seen by people as the real World Championship, and they don't want the world to see Hiarcs smashed.

Do you think that, for example, Texel 1.03 is not original? I ask because Texel is stronger than that other world champion...Junior.

I wonder what will happen later this year when Komodo will play in the next ICGA's WCCC and become World Champion.
It's a pity that Stockfish team doesn't want it to play there.

Hi Carl,

As stated in my original post, Mark sent me a H14 license for free so Hiarcs could join the previous TCEC editions. That is why I respect Mark's decision.

If I had bought the program myself I do not believe that anyone can tell me what to do with it.
