CCC charter and other information : Please read before posting
talkchess wrote:I - Computer-Chess Club Charter

Important Information - Please Read Carefully

The Computer-Chess Club is a free service that has been set up by a group of individuals who became concerned with the persistent breaches of netiquette occurring on the newsgroup, rec.games.chess.computer, namely a very high level of off-topic posts and a very high level of personal insults and abuse.

It was felt that a group where a full range of computer chess ideas could be discussed, and, if necessary attacked, without also making personal attacks on the deliverer of the ideas, would be productive, and might well encourage various well-known figures who were no longer posting in rec.games.chess.computer to return to the arena of discussion without fear of insult or abuse.

Thus, the Computer-Chess Club is a moderated message board which is open to the general public (known as "members"). Its purpose is to allow the members to disseminate and exchange information as it pertains to computer chess without the distractions of personal attacks and off-topic posts.

Once a member gains access to the message board, he may read all messages and post new or response messages with the proviso that these new or response messages:

1. Are, within reason, on the topic of computer chess
2. Are not abusive in nature
3. Do not contain personal and/or libelous attacks on others
4. Are not flagrant commercial exhortations
5. Are not of questionable legal status.

A panel of moderators has the power to erase specific messages that violate the spirit of the charter of the Computer-Chess Club, and to take, if necessary, suitable sanctions against offenders.

Members of the Computer-Chess Club are solely responsible for their own posts on the CCC Message Board. The only recourse members have against any legally dubious or abusive material is to ask and assist the moderators in identifying any such material so that it may be removed swiftly.

The posts on the Computer-Chess Club message board do not necessarily agree (or disagree) with the opinions of Your Move Chess & Games, I.C.D. Corporation, or Computer Chess Reports. These companies do not control, and have no say in, what is posted or how it is posted; nor do these organizations have any say or control over policies and decisions made by the moderators.

By participating here you agree to abide by all of the conditions set forth in the registration terms and in this charter, and you waive any and all rights of litigation against the organizations listed above or the moderators of the CCC message board for any messages that may appear within or for any moderation action or policy.

You are further agreeing to abide by the decision of the moderators should a post of yours be deleted or moved. If you should lose your membership or posting privileges after due consideration of the moderators you agree not to re-enter the forum under an alias or assumed name or by using a friend's account. You also agree that the decisions of moderators are final.

Thank you, and we look forward to your contributions.

Computer-Chess Club.

How to post on Talkchess

This little tutorial will guide you through some of the functionalities Talkchess offers. We'll cover how to post diagrams, games and collections of games, and how to get the best out of pgn4web. (Updated by H.G.Muller on March 2, 2024)

I- Posting positions:

To post a position, you'll need its FEN string. Then, in your post, just sandwich it between [ fen ] and [/ fen] tags. The editor on the submission form has a button to do that. For instance:

[d]1q2r1k1/5pb1/2bppnp1/p1p5/Nr2PPP1/1BBP4/1PP4Q/2KR3R w - - 0 1

Only the board and side-to-move part of the FEN are relevant; the other fields can be omitted. Note that you are not limited to 8x8 (or even rectangular) boards and orthodox pieces:

[d]a/bc/def/ghij/klmno/pqrstu**vw/ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRS/**TUVW

II- Posting a game, games collections and puzzles:
Talkchess now has the ability to display games using Paolo Casaschi's nice pgn4web replayer.

1- Posting a game:
To post a game you will need its PGN (Portable Game Notation) score. Then just add it to your post, between [ pgn] and [ /pgn] (without spaces). The editor in the submission form has a button to do that. For instance:
[pgn][Event "iOS tournament"]
[Site "Nantes, France"]
[Date "2013.01.08"]
[Round "4"]
[White "Shredder iOS"]
[Black "HIARCS iOS"]
[Result "1-0"]

2- Posting a collection of games:
It's exactly as easy as posting a single game: post all of your PGNs between the [ pgn] [ /pgn] tags, with just a blank line between them, that way:

[ pgn]
<... insert you first PGN here ...>

<... insert your second PGN here ...>

<... insert you Xth PGN here ...>
[ /pgn]

For instance:

Note that you can access each game by clicking the three dots "..." in the top of the widget (or use the more visible downward arrow at the top right of the diagram if you are using FireFox or Internet Explorer): it will bring up a list of the games. Your PGNs can even include variations and comments: pgn4web will nicely take care of them.

3- getting the best out of pgn4web:
When you have a pgn4web widget in a page, there are a few hidden functionalities you should know about:
- click on a8 and you'll get debug informations
- click on b8 and get the current FEN string and the PGN score
- click on c8 to get the PGN score of the current game only
- click on d8 to get the PGN scores of all the games in the collection
- clicking on e8 will pop up a window with a great functionality: an analysis board with a javascript version of Garbochess pondering the current position!
- clicking on g8 will bring pgn4web's shortcut squares' help page in a new window
- clicking on h8 will bring pgn4web's general help.

Click h8 to get some more interesting functionalities of pgn4web (there are many!)

Here are some specially useful ones:
- a1 : go to game start (Note that you can also click on any move in the list to reach this position)
- b1 : go to game end

domain ownership

Post by hgm »

Te following legally binding agreement exsists between the Dutch Computer Chess Association and the TalkChess Founder Group:
DATE : _______________________

OWNERSHIP AGREEMENT DOMAIN NAME TALKCHESS.COM

(A) The Computerschaak Vereniging Nederland (CSVN), hereafter called the CSVN
a Dutch association with full legal capacity, Dutch Chamber of Commerce
registration number 40533559. Its purpose is the promotion of computer chess in
the widest sense of the word.

(B) The Founder Group, hereafter called the FG
an independent group of 3 people who want to transfer the ownership of the domain
name “talkchess.com” to the CSVN.

PARTIES

(A) The CSVN
Ruud Martin (chairman) Theo Reijnen (treasurer)
Vlasblok 11 Luzernevlinder 58
4741 GA Hoeven 3544 DK Utrecht
The Netherlands The Netherlands

(B) The FG
Ed Schröder Chris Whittington Harm Geert Müller
Berberispad 1 Vlasdonk 21
7421 CN Deventer 1112 JD Diemen
The Netherlands The Netherlands

Background Statement

In 1997 a group of chess enthusiasts (among them Chris Whittington and Ed Schröder)
created a computer chess forum called the “Computer Chess Club” hosted by ChessUSA,
an American company who owned the domain name “talkchess.com” on which the forum
runs.

In 2023 ChessUSA offered “talkchess.com” for sale. A crowdfunding among the forum
members produced 2635 dollar and was offered to ChessUSA and accepted.
It’s the desire of the FG to find a new stable and reliable partner and host for years and
decades to come and the CSVN was our best choice.

Agreement

Terms of Agreement
After signing this contract the FG will contact ChessUSA who upon our agreement with
them will transfer the ownership of the domain name “talkchess.com” to the CSVN.

1. The CSVN will accept the ownership of the domain name “talkchess.com”, and is
responsible to pay the yearly bill of the name registration of this name and for establishing
and maintaining the link of the domain name to the IP address specified by the FG.

2. The CSVN has no authority over or responsibility for any activity within this named domain
or any subdomain thereof. In particular the hosting of the forum is an activity controlled
by the FG.

3. The FG and its installed moderators are responsible to keep the forum on topic, thus
talks are about computer chess only and while free speech is high valued, personal
attacks, links to illegal material (downloads), commercial advertising are not tolerated.

4. In the hypothetical case the CSVN receives complaints about certain content in the
forum the FG and its moderators are obliged to assist the CSVN in any reasonable way,
for instance by removing posts, banning the member in question. In the hypothetical
case the CSVN and the FG and its moderators don’t reach an agreement both parties
may (or may not) terminate this contract as stipulated in [5] of this chapter.

5. Both parties have the right to terminate this contract at any time, in which case both
parties are obliged to cooperate in the transfer of the ownership of the domain name
“talkchess.com” to the FG within a month.

6. Both parties will appoint one person to be the direct point of contact. For the CSVN this
will initially be the treasurer of the association, for the FG this will be appointed.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, this Agreement has been executed as of the day and year first above
written.

For the moment the FG members are your new moderators. In the near future (when the forum software is able) we (the FG) will call for and organize moderator elections.
