Well, the version Ed has uploaded yesterday seems to be a special version just for Aegon95, it has no mouse support and a less comfortable menu.
My version is the official Socrates 3.0 that I bought almost 20 years ago - I've only removed the copy-protection (which required the original floppy disk for running).

It runs like a champ in doxbox for linux!

I don't remember what was different for the Aegon95 version. It might be stronger or weaker - but it that were really important we wouldn't be running old dos programs!
Capital punishment would be more effective as a preventive measure if it were administered prior to the crime.

Others I have:

- Gromit 1.2
- Nero 5
- Good looking DOS Chess Tiger 1996-1997
- CSTAL (no idea about version number)

Christophe and Chris are easily to find, but who are the authors of Gromit and Nero ?

Hi Ed,

maybe you should also upload my Socrates 3.0 version:
http://www.spaadyshare.net/63ncxe7mzhzx/Socrates30x.zip

It's the regular release version and is more comfortable (with mouse support).
Have download it but I still feel a bit insecure about its status.

Hi Ed,
I think Gromit was from Frank Schneider and Kai Skibbe: Pocketgrandmaster. The program later had to be renamed to Anaconda.

There's no problem in uploading Gromit and Nero, both are freeware programs and can even be found on some other websites.

I'm not too worried, the company I wrote this for is out of business, has been for a decade or two, and I have been unable to contact the company owner. And isn't there a statute of limitations or something like this on old material?

Well, as I already mentioned this is the official Socrates 3.0 program that was sold 20 years ago. The company was Machiavelli Designs, and Don said yesterday that this company doesn't exist anymore and publishing it would be no problem.

Heard of that yes, I thought 25 years. But I wonder if that is global. I looked for Combat Chess (1997) and it is still sold, see: http://www.gog.com/gamecard/combat_chess

So although the engine is mine, the product is 15 years old, the company no longer exist I can't upload it. I could not find such info for Socrates 3.0 so it's up now.

Hello Maestro Ed !

I like a lot DOS chess programs and , by consequence , your great site:

http://www.top-5000.nl/cp.htm

My proposal is to add to this your site the superb DOS chess program Tjes 1.02 of Marcel Nijman. Not every chess lover and DOS era "passionados" knows it ! One of the best DOS I ever seen ! Very good for training at expert level. I think will be a great pleasure for GENERALISSIMO and some other chess players here to know it. In XP works perfectly , without DOS-Box.
This chess program is for free now (sometimes was commercial). The address of this DOS program is:

http://marcelnijman.eu/tjes/

Marcel lives in The Netherlands !

Thank you a lot in advance !

SilvianR
