You can get Komodo 3 for free from the website.

I've tested some DOS programs and with one exception none of them was able to find the solution within 1 hour.
CST DOS finds the solution immediately, but interestingly CST II not in a reasonable time.

Jorge, interesting position. It's actually not about "horizon effect" or "superiority in long term calculation", this is a zugzwang problem which may cause a problem to engines because of null moves.
Here's Houdini's take, using 3 threads on a Core i5-750:

Code: Select all

6R1/8/2pB3k/2P4p/5p1q/5P2/4P1K1/8 w - -

At this moment there is no version of Komodo that can solve this position, Unless Don Dailey is working on his latest devepolment program to include the Null Pruning heuristic algorithm or create a patch similar to the one created for Stockfish 2.2.2 :wink:

Komodo 3 32-bit is only about 20 ELO weaker than Komodo 4 32-bit. How is it bugged?

The good result of Houdini and Critter can be accidental. It seems that both the engines are not experts in zugzwang positions.
Stockfish can solve it on a very high depth (time) thanks to problems with VALUE_DRAW = 0;
My Sting solves it in 19 mintes on a very slow computer.

After 1...Qe1+ 2.Kh2 Qh4+ 3.Kg2 Qe1 4.Bf6 it leads to known position from previous solution.
But now, the main zugzwang position

appears after the logic move Bf6.
