Since programmers MIGHT have reached near maximum software efficiency especially in tactics, we could have a database of the most common closed positions of all time in order to learn how to deal with master draws.
Of course, another one could come up unexpectedly, but we could get 90 percent to 99 percent of the time figured out.
OK, so it is an imperfect science like solving chess but the rating of the software dramatically rises.

do you have the vaguest idea of the number of such positions ? we're talking about more positions than atoms in the universe. dream on...jplchess wrote:Since programmers MIGHT have reached near maximum software efficiency especially in tactics, we could have a database of the most common closed positions of all time in order to learn how to deal with master draws.

Jonathan idea is not laughable at all. And it would be an interesting test set for sure!lucasart wrote:do you have the vaguest idea of the number of such positions ? we're talking about more positions than atoms in the universe. dream on...jplchess wrote:Since programmers MIGHT have reached near maximum software efficiency especially in tactics, we could have a database of the most common closed positions of all time in order to learn how to deal with master draws.

A good starting point would be to extract them from big databases like Chessbase's megabase. Although... how?

What would "dealing" with a closed position entail? What would you be trying to optimise?jplchess wrote:...we could have a database of the most common closed positions of all time in order to learn how to deal with master draws.
Writing is the antidote to confusion.
It's not "how smart you are", it's "how are you smart".

Ok, you can call it "majoritarianism". However, the number of draws and losses in man vs. machine matches would be cut dramatically. This should be at the very least the software efficiency of say Rybka 3 rating.
