A game that would have made Tal smile!

Post by Robert Flesher »

Maybe these are not the strongest settings, but no other engine plays like my Dissident Aggressor setting for Zappa Mexico II. A very exciting attack, that would have made Tal smile!

Dissident aggressor play Nxg3 ?!!, HUH? remember this is a another very STRONG engine it is playing! YOu don't get away with this kind of stuff against engines. Wrong!

It's a nice move. The kind of move that Tal, Spassky, Fischer and more recently Kasparov would make.

I think dxe4! is also a good move here, where white's best reply is probably fxe4, rather than Bxf8.

in fact, I think that dxe4 is the best move here, and Nh5 is not completely sound. Nh5 is certainly a bold and interesting move, but with a correct defense from white, the game will turn out differently... Try playing your Zappa Dissident Agressor against StockFish, where SF is white after Nh5. Given sufficient time, I don't think SF will lose this game.

Instead of g3, SF eventually chooses the more solid defense Qf2, and black's exchange sacrifice has yet to be proven in this position:

I think you missed my point. Perhaps I was a tad to subtle. So let me explain. I agree with everything you said, as I already annotated the game myself , and then with a few engines(They point out all my stupid mistakes). Nh5 and Nxg3 are not the best moves, and this is what impressed/interested me the most. Much like Tal Dissident Aggressor played this risky line and beat its opponent in the complications. This style of Zappa is about the style of chess being played, not the search for the best moves. However, I can tell you this, Zappa knew it was winning when other engines were clueless, only a few moves later did others see the light.

Oh, OK. So Nh5 and Nxg3 are what is known as "Tal sacrifices": sacrifices that create complications that are hard to deal with, but are effectively unsound. The great genious of Tal is that he played such sharp lines, that his opponent was overwhelmed and eventually blundered. Although a Tal sacrifice is often proven incorrect by modern computer analysis, it certainly take nerves of steel to refute over the board :)

I am giving Stockfish and Dissident aggressor a chance to play this out from your given position. They will have approx 3min each per move, let's see what happens

will certainly be an interesting game to watch. SF with white has an advantage after the dubious Nh5, so you might want to allow Zappa a revenge playing the defense

I am pretty sure that Stockfish's Qf2! could be a refutation. I am watching them play now, the white king is exposed, but I do not think black can do enough.

Game over, I adjudicated the game, qf2 was a great move!
