I disagree. He was trained under the old Russian system of countless hours practicing with top Russian grandmasters in a time before personal computers.

You're both correct. Kasparov has been using chessbase since 1985 and Carlsen his whole life. Naturally Carsen is more a product of computers than Kasparov but both have made good use of them.

The word "tactics" was not part of my vocabulary until 1992 with Richard Lang's Mephisto Genius (tactics of a master by that time).

Secondly, Chessbase is now part of a master's database.

It goes "hand to hand". I will not vote in the poll because of the see-saw nature of the chess world. However, the computer will keep improving outdoing the human component.

One example is Wesley So.

He became a GM at age 14. He did not get any training or coaching from GMs. Instead, he trained with Fritz.

i think it is more due to the internet and online chess rather than chess engines why standards are increasing. for ex...a few years ago it was a lot of effort, travel and cost for upcoming players (any player) to find decent oppnts. now they can play strong players and even GMs from all over the world without leaving their front rooms. the internet has just speeded the whole process up, which is why i think we are also seeing far more prodigious talents of late becoming FMs, IMs and GMs at ridiculously young ages.
