ChessBase: the chess revolution in "three months"

Post by JuLieN »

ChessBase is celebrating their 25th birthday. To congratulate them, Gary Kasparov wrote a nice article ( http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=7278 ) that he concludes with a statement we all more or less did those last years:
So my first message is of course congratulations, it is a superb job, well done. But from my own experience I can tell you that complacency may threaten your success. Success very often is the enemy of future success. With all the work you have done ChessBase turned into some kind of Microsoft in the world of chess. So I wish – and this is my second message – that you will move on, by doing your great job, but creating something new and elevating chess computers, chess programs, the virtual world of chess to a new level. Changing the world once is not enough.
To which, ChessBase answers:
A note to Garry Kasparov from the ChessBase team: We appreciate your final admonition and will take it very seriously. Will you give us three months to introduce the new revolution in chess and computers?
So what do you think, guys, will be this "new revolution in chess and computers?"

My proposals:
- a new strong chess engine (Houdini 2.0?) ?
- CB going into the cloud fad, and providing online CPU power, à la Rybka Cluster ?
- the two previous proposals combined? ( = Houdini Cluster ? )

I strongly doubt that they'll touch Houdini. Just my opinion.

Agreed for multiple reasons.
First, the program is not original. Second it is not a "revolutionary jump" by any stretch of that term...

I believe Vas has already said that both chessbase and convekta are working on clients to make it easy to use the Rybka Cluster, as easy as using an UCI engine.

Hi,

1) ChessBase engines are now aware of the chess rules and will not analyse with pawns on 1st/8th rank, multiple kings/adjacent kings/... What a revolution...

2) Now 2/3 of the screen are used for the menu...
3) It will play all kind of chess variants just like Winboard and you will have 1 person in each room for this...
