my recommendation is that if you have a new macbook pro, do not purchase hiarcs. I'll wait to see what support says, and pass on if there is a resolution

The GUI is slightly primitive but the engine is not.

Stokfish is UCI and runs with almost any GUI, so I am not sure what you mean. You can run it under XBoard, nothing primitive about that.

Scid vs. PC works ok on OSX but you'll have to install extra engines yourself. I recently bought a G4, and am looking at polishing up the OSX build, so will gladly help with installation.

Shredder for Mac is just fine. There is also a payable version, if you are only looking for an interface.

ok, bought shredder too. must hide credit card bill from wife..
Shredder is indeed simple and so far robust gui. I like the ability to update the opening book on the web. It is a pity the engine is not a 100 points closer to the other top engines. Is stefan still trying to improve it much?

Hello Joseph,
Go to Daylen's site, get yourself the Stockfish and show your wife the bill if you are in trouble
I think you need the Mac OS X 10.6+ version? Well, that's the one on top of the list anyway, and iOS version is for the iPad so that is a bit different not for your Mac. Any UCI engine that is compiled for your operating system should work in the Shredder GUI, or in SCID. I'm not sure if HIARCS interface can run other UCI engines. And I also don't know what version of XBoard would work on a MAC, you would have to ask Harm Geert Muller. If there is one available I'd purchase it and show bill to wife. Same for SCID. There is also a GUI under construction by Tord Romstad himself but I don't know what is the status of that right now. That is more a work in progress.
Regards, Eelco
