Inasmuch as people claim that Fruit is the "grandfather of all modern top engines", I'm actually curious...

Rybka and houdini are not clones of fruit.
It is a fact that they are clearly different from fruit in the moves that they suggest and a clone by definition produce the same moves.
I think that the question if something of them is a derivative of fruit is not relevant and simply does not interest most people.
That might be the first thing you have ever actually confirmed.Houdini wrote:I can confirm that I've never even looked at the source codes of Fruit.Uri Blass wrote:Rybka and houdini are not clones of fruit.

Alexandra did not write to people in this forum and I guess that most chess players do not care about the question if A is a derivative of B.pawnslinger wrote:Hi Uri:

I am not clear as to the terms of the GPL, perhaps there is someone here that could clarify the GPL for us.
But it seems clear to me that source code provided under the GPL is not completely free to use for just ANY purpose. As a chess player and a programmer, I am very interested in this issue. It is not a new issue, and it is not limited to chess engines.
But one thing seems clear to me, if Fabien and the FSF don't care to enforce their own license, THEN the GPL becomes worhtless. And that would be a sad day.
Sincerely,
Ed
